TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion confirms that it is possible to apply for a 3-month Non-B visa while holding a tourist visa in Bangkok. However, one must have at least 15 days left on their current tourist visa to apply in-country, as the application process includes a 14-day consideration period. After obtaining the Non-B visa, one can apply for a yearly extension of stay when they have 45 days or less remaining on the initial 90-day Non-B stamp.

Not every company will do the in country conversions and some insist on sending people to a thai consulate to get the Non-B.

The only place around here that issues year-long, multi-entry Non-B visas (the kind you exit/re-enter the country on every 90 days) is the thai consulate in Penang

, not Vientiane or Savannakhet, they only do 90 day single entry ones.

Consulate in Penang only issue 1 year non B if you have the Work Permit with minimum 8 months validity.

Thanks man! The question is basically what's easier and cheaper: do that or travel to laos and do it all over there for 1 year

the 90 day non-B is 2000baht whether you do it in Lao or whether you do it at the immigration office.

you aren't gonna get a year long Non-B in Lao at either consulate. :/

You need at least 15 days left on your current "admitted until" stamp to do it in country because of the 14 day under consideration period

You would take documentation from the company you're gonna work for and go apply for a 90 day Non-B at the immigration office. It goes under consideration for 14 days and then you go back and get the Non-B and the new 90 day stamp inked into your passport. Once you have 45 days or less left on that 90 day stamp, you take more documentation from the place you work for back to the immigration office and apply for a yearly extension of stay.
