Can artists apply for the dtv? (I'm thinking along the lines of fine art artists who do artist residencies and essentially having this be like an artist residency).

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the eligibility of artists, particularly fine artists participating in residencies, to apply for Thailand's Digital Nomad Visa (DTV). The consensus is that artists can potentially apply as long as they can demonstrate a stable income and engage in cultural activities, although some comments raise concerns about the feasibility and requirements, such as needing a work permit for certain activities conducted in Thailand.

What is an artist residency? Is this something that is done remotely?

an artists residency is when someone just goes and lives somewhere else while working on their art. Usually this is through a non profit that provides the residency. But I would just be traveling with my kids and working on art as if it were a studio.

I guess it depends on how you’re making money and where you’re selling art. You would have to export everything. I’m not even sure if they would accept it, as it’s not really a remote/online job.

I think anything works, as long as you have a company and/or remote work contract and can show income?

Think it through, how will you play the instrument when it's in another country! Or paint or whatever, If you play it in Thailand then you need a work permit.

You have to paint with your digits (fingers)...

The nomad part is funny, as part of the requirement is renting a fixed apartment? Lol

Anyone can as long as you can produce the required bank balance and show you are doing a cultural activity or proof you are a digital nomad online worker

For photography not. You are not allowed to use anythig from Thailand. You can't provide photography services here, nor sell shots of Thai scenery.

I mostly photograph my life/kids and pair them with poetry. But was also thinking of working on prints - I embroider prints and cyanotype for sale. Do you think I could work on those there?

if you would operate photobooth somewhere outside of Thailand and just work on a digital version of photograps. Yes.

If you would be retouching existing shots from abroad, yes.

If you want to take pictures in Thailand or even write a blog/vlog while in Thailand, thats also not allowed. I saw a quite a long list what you can and what you can't do somewhere on the internet, try to google it.

You are not allowed to work within Thailand, whether with Thai nationals or foreigners. I believe taking photos of Thailand and selling them to foreign entities is likely acceptable or falls into a grey area, but taking photos for clients based in Thailand is prohibited under a DTV visa.

so what about YouTubers? Aren’t they taking footage of Thailand? I’m confused about the difference as photography is part of my income also 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️

It's all about the money and where it comes from. If you're getting paid by YouTube, it usually isn't an issue. But if you're selling your services to people in Thailand or promoting businesses here (and getting any kind of commission), then you're considered to be working in Thailand and need the proper visa.

you’ll have to show invoices that you actually make money from this and business license (LLC from the USA or similar) proving it’s a real profitable business.

agreed 👍... sadly she does not have them. And needs to think about getting the DTV visa another way. With a Soft Power option.
