Now that the visa exemption is 60 days for Canada, can we still apply for the 30 day extension right away or do I have to wait until there is 30 days or less left? TIA

TLDR : Answer Summary
Canadian citizens enjoying the new 60-day visa exemption in Thailand cannot apply for a 30-day extension right away. Typically, applications for extensions are accepted when there are 30 days or less remaining on the visa. However, some immigration offices in major tourist areas may allow applications with up to 45 days left, while others may require only a week remaining. Always check with the specific immigration office for their policies.
some immigration offices send people away and tell them to return when they have 7 days or less remaining, I've witnessed them in the Pattaya jomtien office, sending people away with five days remaining, because it was so busy! and telling them to return when they have one or two remaining.

No office will allow you to apply for an extension when you have 60 days left.
Most offices will allow you to apply when you have 30 days or less left.
A few will let you apply with 45 days left (Bangkok, ChiangMai, Phuket, some others)
A couple will only let you apply for a tourist extension when you have 7 days or less left (Koh Samui, Koh Phangnan)
