Hi,

Is an immigration officer allowed to stamp you in for a lesser time than what your visa is for? For instance, if they ask you how long you're going to be in Thailand under your 60 day Tourist Visa and you say 45 days, can they stamp you in for only 45 days or will it still be the default 60 days allotted by the Tourist Visa?

Thank you

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, an immigration officer can stamp you in for a lesser duration than the maximum allowed by your visa. For example, if you enter Thailand on a 60-day Tourist Visa and inform the officer that you'll stay for only 45 days, they have the authority to stamp your passport for that lesser duration.

Yes, they can.

you get the time the visa allows.

single entry tourist visa 60 days

single entry Non-Imm visa 90 days

etc

FWIW: I have never heard of a case nor seen a stamp where someone was stamped in for less time then they're allowed.

Whoops, I take that back;

I know of ONE instance where someone was living here on free stamps. They got pulled aside at the airport flying in and were going to be denied entry 😮

BUT

they showed a ticket out in 14 days and for some strange reason other than having the officer deny them entry. They got an entry stamp that was only 14 days.

This was totally a case of someone abusing the free entry stamp system, getting caught and is the only case I've ever heard of where someone got stamped in for less time than they were supposed to get (30 days in their case on a free entry stamp)

I had a buddy recently bounced back in on a "freebie" and got stamped for 28 days not 30. No questions were asked maybe just bad math. He didn't question it since it was a "freebie" bounce.

I did see one before that got 28 days but I honestly think that was just the inker was on the wrong date. 😮

All 30 day visa exempt entry stamps are 29 days from the date you stamp in (western count at least 😉 ) because no matter what time you stamp in that day is counted as day ONE
