How can I open a bank account in Thailand as a tourist without a work permit?

Dec 2, 2021

Sorry if I post a lot, but I tried to open a bank account in Bangkok and went to two banks. Citibank and Bangkok Bank and they told me that it is not posinle if I do not work in Thailand, but the Bangkok Bank also told me that I would have to go to my embassy for a reference letter or something like that ... can someone give me some advice on how I can open a bank account without so much trouble? I'm italian, and I are turist.. thank you very much 🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
Opening a bank account in Thailand as a tourist can be challenging due to varying requirements at different banks. Generally, most banks will require some form of proof of residence, which may include a letter from your embassy and a rental contract. Some users have successfully opened accounts by being persistent and visiting multiple branches, as not all staff may be familiar with the procedures for foreigners. It’s advised to consider banks like Bangkok Bank or Kasikorn, particularly in tourist-heavy areas. Bringing a Thai friend or partner might help ease communication and navigate bank policies more effectively.

Keep trying, I opened an account with Khrungthai Bank in Udon Thani on a tourist visa!

Admittedly I did try 2 other banks prior & was refused 💰

Presistence and creativity will always work.SCB has been good over the years with the odd wrinkle.Bought a condo and needed to transfer 3 mill baht from my account to his.Same bank same branch. Was advised there would be a 1pcent transfer charge.Same bank same branch.Getting knowhere I decided to withdraw 3 mill baht cash.Cause a small stir, advised would take a while counting all the notes. No problem. Finally some one with a brain asked what I intended doing with the money.I will deposit into my friends account. After 2 min of whispered discussion I was advised I could tranfer at a cost of 100 b.Thailand in a nutshell.

Just go to your embassy

All I needed to open an account at Krungsri on a tourist visa was my "lease" agreement from the dormitory I was staying at, my passport, Thai mobile number & a big wad of cash to deposit. I brought a Thai friends with me to translate, but other than that it was pretty straight forward.

Try Krung Sri, my bf just did 4 months ago with tourist visa.

You will also need leasing agreement from the landlord just state that you are renting from which date to which date (at least one year), housing document from landlord, a copy of their id, then your passport and visa

You should be good to go
Icetieww *************
We did in central festival mall in Phuket. No need embassy document

Each branch has their deposit KPI every month. If you bring chunk of money, they be happy to accept. Under the condition, if they are not strict to do KYC.

I went with a Thai female friend (who is now my girlfriend). She did all the talking. All they really wanted to know was what account will most of the $$$ be coming from overseas, and also to have a look at my passport. No visa, just 30 day exemption. I think she saw the many entry stamps.

But I honestly think it is the mood of the person you speak to on any given day.

So the bank advised you on what to do , like go to the Embassy etc etc yet you still leap on to Facebook to ask others, why.???

I used a bit of subterfuge. Walked into Krungsri (yellow bank) a few years ago znd using Google translate asked if there was a bank near here where I could deposit 10 million baht. Yes they said and fell over themselves to help even opening a Krungsri Prime VIP prime account for me.

When they eventually asked if I was going to deposit the whole 10 million today I said no. I will deposit 100,000 Nd transfer the rest next week.

I still have my vip account with all the perks and never deposited the lump sum!!

I have also tried the "so 1 is 4500 baht how much if I buy 100" trick. OK I will buy 1 now and if its OK I will come back for the other 99. That went down better in the middle east Souks though.

How would you use your Thailand bank account? I have a bank account but I think I have only used it once years ago for the initial visa required immigration deposit. Though admittedly I am lucky because my US bank reimburses the fee for the weekly ATM cash needs. Most credit cards accepted here.
Dianne *****
@Brad ******
It's useful if ordering food on Tuk, you can scan and transfer without having to have the exact cash. I always pay the vet with bank transfers so don't have to worry about having sufficient cash with me. If you go out shopping and have left your card at home, most shops of any size, will allow you to scan and pay with your phone. I have used it at the supermarket and at restaurants that don't want to touch cash. I have used it to transfer money to charities, pay for tickets to events, pay my monthly internet account, pay my rent, put credit on my phone, buy air tickets, train tickets and bus tickets in Thai baht. Using a Thai bank account at a point of sale reduces the losses in currency conversions incurred when using a foreign credit card

If u have a work permit or retirement visa that will b a great help

Documents:

•Letter from Embassy stating u leave here

•Rental contract

•And Visa

Foreign banks like Citibank , Honking and Shanghai bank they charge a huge commission for everyhh to Ing u do

The Thais banks as just as efficient with lower rates

Krungsi Kasikorn are good banks to use. Sometimes u will encounter some idiotic people that make blood pressure shoot up to the roof

SCB is quite hopeless lots of complains from friends who uses their service
Jonas *************
To get "retirement visa" (non+o) you need thai bankaccount. I asked 5 different masks in bkk. Only Bangkok baNo was helpful.

But you need address & passport verification from your embassy according to theit rules.

They're might be ways assume this, if you go with that person, in other banks, but any other require work/study visa.

Some get lucky and keep saying "no no problem at all". Moraine they did it long ago. Many many changes.
Sam ********
Good luck. It’s a complete waste of time. You can’t open under a tourist Visa. I tried 7 different banks and branches.

They all want this letter and that letter. Nothing consistent. I finally gave up and went to an agency where you can pay a “fee” and bazinga, you have a Bangkok bank account. Thai mafia is strong.
Tony ********
Yes you can, I have opened 2 accounts, and had only tourist visa. All they wanted was my current address when I'm in Thailand.

Go in and put 250,000 baht cash on the desk and ask to speak to the branch manager.

Works every time. (It’s down to the discretion of the individual branch and their policy fyi)

I think it was about 1500 baht. They took the picture, took copies of all the docs they needed, filled out the forms and went to immigration to get the letter. To me it was worth the money but it can be done cheaper if you are willing to go yourself.

I used an agent for peace of mind as I wanted it done quickly. It is well worth having a Thai Bank account if your planning on spending any time here.

I mean, I can go to immigration with the apartment rental contract and a letter of reference from the apartment owner saying that he knows me and has been renting this apartment for years and I pay all the services on time, and with this immigration would give me a Residence letter, I have an exempt tourist visa .. ???

Correct, together with passport and photo and I think they charge a small amount to get it. I used an agent at the time for the residency certificate and I had to give them my passport and rental agreement and they took care of everything for me.

I think in most people cases, they not really tourist here for a short term but just might end up on the visa for a while. I have been here a year, stv then visa exempt, then Thai ed. So most of that time is under tourist visa. It can be inconvenient with high atms fees, plus some places need bank transfers like for water bill, or even a bar went to the other day, no cash, no card, bank only.
Alain ***************
Just try another branch, and then another. I needed to visit some more to get online banking working. I could do it myself at the atm. But didn’t know that lol

Go to the Main branch of Kasikorn bank on Bangkok they understand. After you get account go to your local branch and have account transferred there.

I had loads of issues with other banks before I went there.

If you find the right branch proof of residence is not needed. Any long term visa should do. Many branches do not want to deal with foreigners. Try Kasikorn for a friendlier experience. Shop branches until you get one that wants your account.

I did likewise with Bangkok Bank in Sikhio, Korat. The branch has since been demolished and I'm due for a new bank book & Visa debit card. I hope that doesn't cause any headaches. Initially BB Sikhio said no, not possible. We went, had lunch and returned to the same branch, different staff member, and it suddenly became possible. 🤔

I think if the bank teller you're dealing with isn't familiar with the process, a simple no, not possible is less of a headache for them.
Ian *********
@Brad *******
trouble is it's all about face in Thailand,I think if they don't know and they ask a superior. They are admitting they don't know and to a Thai they will lose face, assume that's why you ask again someone else knows and hey presto you get your bank account

Not impling that's right or wrong just how it is
Brad ********
@Ian ********
I think you're spot on the money with that comment. Losing face or even the thought of it can turn a simple chore into an insurmountable obstacle. I did need the residence certificate which wasn't an issue as I just colour photocopied the one I paid ฿500 for to get my Thai license. I was told that I'd need to buy 2 residence certificates for ฿1,000, however, I thought I'd just try my luck and thankfully the bank accepted the colour copy of the original.
Charles ********
You can open a bank account without a WP, all banks tend to say that first.. But it stupid. How many retires and elite in Thailand is an obvious indication you do not need a WP.

You can get a letter from your embassy, in the case of the US it just an affidavit of your address. Other embassy do it differently. Some branchs may just accept a lease agreement if you hit the pavement hard enough.

Sounds like Bangkok is probably the best place to go on tourist visa. I did one at krungsri, but basically only cash deposit and atm, no transfers in or out, mobile banking, etc.

I ended up opening one once I got my ed visa ink at krungthai and pretty with that.
Terary **********
This question comes up frequently. I think the most sane answer is that you have to shop around. Go to a few banks. When I opened my account (7 years ago) I had to be persistent with the person helping me. She had to call her supervisor a couple of times and finally they got the account open. Technically I was on a tourist visa. I worked for a school and they were going to convert the visa, blah blah blah.
