Was told by the Los Angeles Consultate that the brokerage account we have and use essentially as a saving account, (no investments) isn't acceptable for the checking or savings account requirement. Does that track with what others have experienced?
Answer summary
The Los Angeles Consulate has indicated that brokerage accounts are not acceptable for the checking or savings account requirement for expat visas in Thailand. Experiences vary, as some individuals report that their brokerage accounts were accepted, particularly when explanations about the account features (like checks and ATM access) were provided. However, the consensus emphasizes the importance of having a traditional bank account to avoid complications.

If you're using the brokerage account as a savings account, do you mean you leave cash in a money market fund? If you're not going to Thailand for the next 4-5 months, why don't you just put the required cash into a high interest savings account for 3 months? The interest rate isn't much different, and insignificant for 3 months.
