TLDR : Answer Summary
Opening a savings account in Thailand does not strictly require a work permit (W-P). Various individuals, including retirees and long-term tourists, can successfully open bank accounts. However, the process may be challenging. It's advisable to look for specific guidance on banking and visa requirements through forums or official embassy sites. Bangkok Bank is one recommended option for account opening.
Tell your LT friend there is a site called the official Royal Thai Embassy site that will explain all the intricacies of visas in the UK.......and recommend some good street markets also.......
Retirees, elites, ltr holders all have bank accounts....even tourist. Anyone that told you needed a work permit just lied to you. Opening an account is a little hard. Search this group, great past advice on how best to do this on 1000s of posts just like yours.
