Hey guys, wanting to ship my laptop from Australia to Thailand. It's a second hand laptop with a market value of $800-900 USD. Will there be taxes or duties? If so, how much? Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When shipping a second-hand laptop from Australia to Thailand, it is essential to consider potential customs duties and taxes. While some users reported that laptops may have no duty if valued under 40,000 THB, others noted that customs will declare the value. Using regular mail instead of professional couriers like DHL can help avoid customs fees. Some suggest bringing the laptop personally to bypass any duties altogether, as customs tends to impose fees based on the declared value by the sender.

Wrap it in a towel and put in your suitcase. No fees

don't do it. Sell in Australia and buy one here.

30% of value placed on it. If reviewed and valued by customs.

Suggest Registered Express Airmail , no couriers unless you have friends here at UPS or DHL type situation.

A speciality of Thailand: If you use any of the professional carriers you will face customs payments as all they (carrier, agent, customs) work together in order to make the bill as expensive as possible. Only serious shipment is done by ordinary post. It takes time, but no cheat. Best would be to let it bring by any friend.

I got my laptop 4 months back from Dubai via Aramex..any laptop with value more than 40,000 THB you have to pay import fee..if it's less than 40,000 THB then there will be no import fees but only tax and handling fees.

In the end of the day it's all depend on the price of the laptop written by the sender.

Also...the laptop will have a battery, so you have to expect a delay in shipping..my laptop took 21 days in a warehouse in Dubai to male sure the battary is safe then it was sent to me.

Best way is for someone to bring it. If that's not possible, avoid DHL and the other couriers. If you use them you will get hit by customs for sure. Just send it with regular tracked and registered mail. I have received several ipads and several laptops this way from Denmark. One at a time. Never an issue. No customs and took about a week each time.

Looked in to this about 4 years ago. Then there was no duty on laptops. Things change though.

The market value is irrelevant. It's going to be impossible to estimate the duty because the customs offers are going to tell you how much it's worth regardless of what proof you have of the value and the duty will be based on that and will probably be more than you expected. If you can find someone to bring it with them in luggage it'll be free.
