TLDR : Answer Summary
A British passport holder, having lived abroad for over 40 years and residing temporarily in Vietnam, is seeking advice on obtaining a retirement visa in Thailand. The individual has sufficient funds in Vietnam and Australia, along with a Thai bank account. Suggestions from the community recommend initially applying for a 90-day Non-Immigrant Type O visa before transitioning to a yearly extension. It is emphasized that there is no specific 'retirement visa,' but rather options like the Non-O and Non-O-A visas exist. Police checks should be obtained from the home country, where the passport was issued, such as the UK.

There are a couple different visas and options that all fall under the "retirement visa" broad brushing.

You get a year-long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type O-A (Long Stay) visa from a thai consulate where your passport is from OR from a thai consulate in a country you legally live in.

You get a 90 day Non-Immigrant Type O visa from a thai consulate or from the thai immigration office and then you apply for a yearly extension of stay at the immigration office.

, the Non-O-A visa from a thai consulate is far superior to getting a Non-O and a yearly extension inside the country.

If you can meet the requirements go that way for sure. That Non-O-A visa gives you almost 2 full years inside the country trouble free.

The Non-O-A visa requires the medical certificate and the police back ground check. The visa is issued for a year and every time you enter the country you are stamped in for a completely new calendar year.

Okay, we need to first clear up a misconception :/

Contrary to every Tom Dick and Somchai calling it one there is no such thing as a retirement visa, period end of story.

There is no requirement to have a police background check when you apply for a 90 day Non-O visa OR a yearly extension of stay based on being over 50 (retirement) at a thai immigration office.

If you legally live in vietnam you could apply for the year long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type O-A visa there.
