Why was my tourist visa application denied in Laos despite previous visas?

Lee Van Willem I moved your question here, this has nothing to do with waiting in line at Cheag Wattana Immigration Office.

Lee Van Willem It seems to be chaos at the moment. I travelled to Laos to get a single entry tourist visa, got in the longest queue I’ve ever seen, went to collect the next day and they just open the window and said declined (despite only having 2 previous tourist visas, and people I knew in the queue having 5,6 and 8.

After forcing the window open, I spoke with a lady who said they refused it as they “suspect” I’m working illegally. So ran our printed off bank statements etc to prove I’m not, came back in and they said ‘come back tomorrow at 1.30”. Went back, and the woman I arranged to meet was no where to be seen, and then after being ignored by a few people managed to cause enough of a scene to summons woman who had lost my passport, and spent the next hour looking for it.

Anyways, I missed my flight and had to spend an extra night in Laos- there seems to be no consistency in what they are doing- who can they refuse one passport with 2 tourist visas, and issue some to people whose passports are full?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user shares their frustrating experience applying for a tourist visa at the Thai Consulate in Laos, facing denial despite having previous tourist visas. After being accused of possibly working illegally, they attempted to provide proof but continued to encounter chaos in the process, leading to missing their flight. Commenters discuss the inconsistency of visa approvals, cultural reactions to conflict in Thailand, and the implications of making a scene at a consulate.

I deleted several comments, including the request of Lee Van Willem due to comments made to delete this post. But as this is the first report that Tourist Visa get denied as mentioned in other topics with the announcement that shortly been showed on the wall and disappeared again, I think this is a good warning to all. Be aware, that the Thai Consulate in Laos is pulling the strings. Take care in what ever you do.

There is only inconsistency int this story made by assumptions. I get refused and others with full passports get the visa issued. If the passport was full, there is no place for a visa. Did you personally check their applications, checked every page of their passports to see if this is true?

Am I following this correctly or did I drop into the middle of a maelstrom? Did Robert Lagas, Thai Visa God, get denied a visa to enter Thailand? I have to follow this!

Sadly inconsistency is common here.

you where wrong with start making a scene in a consulate or embassy, and they where right when suspecting you to work illegally ...

I doubt they lost your passport. They probably got annoyed with you and said they lost it. I would make a joke about it, and not caused a scene. It would also not surprise me if the "lost" passport was right next to her computer and she was keeping it to be passive aggressive.

How long have you been in Thailand, and Thai culture? Making a scene DOES NOT work in Thailand, and Thai culture. What you need to do is to smile, laugh, and make a joke about it.

I got into a traffic accident with a guy (his fault), we got out, exchanged information, smile, and laugh about it. Then we went to the police station a few days later with the insurance people, smiled and laugh about it too, and I got my back light replaced. I know darn well if I got angry nothing good would happen. Nothing.
