TLDR : Answer Summary
An embassy may schedule an over-the-phone interview for a DTV visa weeks after application due to certain doubts or questions regarding the application. This can be standard procedure as they review the details of the application and may need clarification. Although this can be perceived as inconvenient, it allows the embassy to address any issues without requiring an in-person visit. Past experiences shared by individuals indicate that such interviews can sometimes be used for training new staff or to ensure the applicant's claims align with their current situation.

They have questions regarding your application. Are you still in the country that you applied via? I see your previous post stating that you might try and sneak into Thailand while the application is being processed.

yes, but if they call and ask you where you are, is your plan to lie and say directly to the consular that you are in the country?

- Well if you are in the process of applying for a DTV, then you don’t have a tourist visa, correct? I believe you mean visa exemption. That being said, you are supposed to stay in the jurisdiction where you apply until you get the visa. If they learn that you are no longer there, they will cancel the application.

Because they can, and it's written in the rules. Lucky you it's over the phone, and they didn't make you to pay a visit to the embassy.
