Hi,

I just came through immigration at BKK a couple of hours ago.

I'm from the US with a new non imm o-a visa. All went as expected, but the officer did pull out his personal phone and took several pictures of my passport.

Why would he do that?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user, an American with a new non O-A visa, shares an experience at Bangkok's immigration where an officer took several pictures of their passport using a personal phone. The comments include various theories ranging from the officer possibly needing images for training purposes to light-hearted remarks about the user's appearance. Some users suggest it's normal and shouldn't be a cause for concern, while also providing information about visa stamping procedures.

Why do many people stress so much? I've crossed borders many times. No problems. I even got chatted up by a thai lady because she fancied me. Just be nice and natural.

they do that sometimes. Don't worry about it.

I'd be more worried that they stamped you in correctly.

On an O-A visa you should get stamped in for a year minus two days (next year has a leap year so there's an extra day in Feb)

SO if you stamped in today you should be stamped in until the 20th of Oct 2020..

People have enough trouble managing their permissions of stay using a calendar they grew up knowing. Imagine if they had to use the Thai lunar version!

@Jonathan ************
they use our calendar for stamping you in and out of the country and for extensions and there IS a leap year next year in it :P

the Thai lunar calendar has an extra eighth month every alternating two and three years--true

no leap year in Thai calendar :)

Exactly what he gave me.

Thanks

How do you know it was his personal phone and not a phone provided by the Royal Thai Police Immigration Bureau?

I don't know why he did. I'm guessing maybe to count how many non-o-a visas go there. I wouldn't worry about it.
