Hi everyone, yesterday morning the cops went to my friends condo and left a message at the lobby saying they wanna check if his passport expired and to leave a copy of the passport at the lobby. His passport is valid for 4 more years and his visa expires in 8 months... it's kinda weird... has anyone had similar experiences?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user shares an experience where immigration police left a message at a friend's condo wanting to check his passport validity. The friend's passport is valid for another four years, but concerns arise due to the unusual request. Other users respond with similar experiences, suggesting that these checks might be legitimate and hinting at a wider trend where immigration police are monitoring long-term stayers. Users advise verifying the identity of the officers and suggest leaving a copy of the passport at the lobby, while also recommending that the friend visit the immigration office to clarify the matter.

Just reading back through one of them threads. One guy had left the country weeks before but seems there was an omission in the immigration database and it had him down as being on overstay. He's sorted now but reading it, it was a bit of agro as he wasn't in the country and found out when they raided his house via his girlfriend and the neighbours being questioned.

Buddy of mine had the same a few days ago.

Been some reports on the Darkside forum of the same and in a few different provinces.

Appears checks were made and they was legitimate immigration police with orders from Bangkok to check on long term stayers that haven't left the country for some time.

He left there months ago.... He has since been back to immigration to change the address... So they have his new details

Still not sure mate...... They just came to his apartment.... He doesn't live there anymore..... They came back the next day and took photos of the room.... Dunno.... Very weird

What did it end up being for?

Yeah just leave a copy of your personal passport at the lobby for them to come back and pick up. Don't forget that immigration has scans and records of everything he submitted to them. They would have no need to randomly visit his hotel to get this information. If your friend is having doubts or worries he should visit the police station or immigration office to inform them what is happening.

And you're sure these are cops because they had their lanyards that showed the police station they worked at and their ranks or what?

@Nemo ******
, could be a scam, unless they were immigration police (from the immigration office). Real police don't care about visas or a passport expiring.

I'm very skeptical that they were actual real cops as well
