Hi, I'm not sure which form I need to download and fill in when applying for a visa extension based on retirement from Chaengwattana. Currently on an EdVisa with just over 30 days left. Is it TM7? TM 86? Thank you.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user seeks guidance on which form to use (TM7 or TM86) for applying for a visa extension based on retirement while currently holding an Education Visa (EdVisa) with limited time left. Commenters clarify that switching from an EdVisa to a retirement extension may not be possible without leaving Thailand. They recommend filling out both forms due to varying practices. Key requirements for both forms include documents like a passport, proof of residency, a bank statement reflecting sufficient funds, and related fees.

Your situation is a bit unusual, but everything in Thailand is of course in the discretion of the immigration.

I would just played it safe here and filled out both forms. The requirements for the TM.86 and TM.7 is more or less the same.

Practice can vary, but this is the general requirements for extension of stay;

TM.7

*Passport

*Copy photo page passport

*Copy latest stamp in passport

*Copy visa or extension in passport

*Copy TM.6 if you have. (discontinued for all entries by air, land and sea at date)

*Receipt TM.30

*Lease contract or proof of home

*Pass-photo

*Bank statement or confirmation from your embassy

*1900 thb cash

And this is the general requirements for a TM.86 in addition to your bank statement.

What stamp are you actually on? If your on an extension of stay based on education you may be able to change to an extension of stay based on retirement. But if your on a visa you will probably need to leave the country to get rid of it

that's always the question when people write "I am on a retirement visa" or "I am on an ED visa", when they actually are on a one-year Extension of Stay. On an extension, one can change the "reason" the extension was issued for. On an initial visa, all that's left is leave the kingdom

As said I don’t think you can convert this inside country. If you just cross the border and re-enter on a 30 days visa exemption you apply for a 90 days Non O first on TM.87. After you can do your extensions of stay.

If you already have a bank account you’ll need to bank 800K in your account when you apply and you’ll need at least 15 days left on your stamp. Time should be no issue here as you’re also allowed to do a 30 days extension on your visa exemption.

To the best of my knowledge, you cannot convert from ED to retirement. Have you asked your immigration office if it's possible?

You'll likely need to cancel your ED extension and leave Thailand and then return as a tourist.

thank you, yes I’ve asked and been told I can with a letter from the school confirming I’ll complete my studies

they should provide the forms to you then. It's best to use the form they give you as some offices are very particular about their forms and will make you do it over if you print it incorrectly

If you’re allowed to apply for a 90 days Non O visa directly on your current visa, it’s TM.86. After 90 days you’ll do an extension of stay on a TM.7. You for sure can’t go directly from a ED-visa to an extension of stay.

(TM.87 is for visa exemption)
