I am a retired American. Been traveling the globe for a few years now. Have made the decision to move to Thailand next year. How do I enter the country without a onward ticket, if I plan to live there? Thanks for any info.
Answer summary
The best way for a retired American looking to move to Thailand is to apply for a Non-O visa before arriving in the country. This visa allows for an initial stay of 90 days and simplifies the process of opening a bank account and applying for a long-term extension. It is advised to avoid using fake onward tickets as immigration checks have become stricter. Instead, securing a proper visa that fits your long-term stay intentions is crucial.

You don’t need an onward ticket at any time

If you plan to live here you get the proper visa such as Non-O or Non-OA with the proper long stay visa you do not need onward travel ticket.

Qatar Airways does allow booking one-way flights to Thailand. However, entry to Thailand with a 90-day non-retirement O visa depends on Thailand's immigration rules, which you should verify with the relevant authorities.

Have you ever BEEN to Thailand ?

Yes or no, no matter. Google "How do I retire to Thailand ?"

Just buy a refundable airplane ticket. Don't use those sites that generate fake tickets. Thai immigration is unlikely to check it. Who does check are the airlines and they're going to detect a fake ticket.

Petr S. Van Valkenburg Thailand is little cheaper than USA have more money left over in Thailand. When I lived Thailand for 3 years 2012 I use to talk with retired expats most said the number 1reason for living Thailand was economics. They were receiving about 1000 1100 1200 a month social security said they can manage pretty easy affordable life but back in the USA they said it would not work too much if life or be homeless

Apply for a Non Imm O visa if you're 50 or over. Or buy cheap onward travel within your allowed stay

Assuming you are actually above the age of 50....

Apply for Non-O visa before arriving.

You will need it to open a bank account.

Which you will need, along with 800k thb put into it, to apply for a year long extension of stay.

Todd McGowan travel is one thing, moving to another country is a totally different story, his question is legit.

First apply for a visa at an embassy of Thailand with purpose of stay long time.

Then follow the rules. If needed then use an agent to help with paperwork.

it’s really not. The problem is the same - it’s about the right visa.

You obviously don’t need to apply for a visa at an embassy anymore. And it can all be done after arrival in Thailand.

Thailand breaks it down in two categories, you have money (and get LTR or Thai elite visa) or you don’t. And then you need to sort it out at immigration offices or use an agent.

You can certainly apply for Non-O before arrival. But really not necessary

Todd McGowan 🤣 that’s not what I answered…

You wrote he had travelled around the globe and still not understand…

He wish to move to Thailand and ask for advice and not grrrrrrr

Yes, it’s the opposite that Thai gov want, apply for a visa ”before” not need money, we all got money 🤣 it’s just put them at a place. It sound like you not even trust banks or even governments 🤣

An agent is a advisor, you can buy the proper advices you want or use them all the way, they are humans and can be hired for a purpose. Learn from it or use, I value my time and environment, I calcite all and see 🧐 it cost me buy it for 1000 but it cost me drive there 2.000….

Buy an air or train or bus ticket to malaysia or Cambodia or Laos or Myanmar...

just get a bus ticket to Laos. you can get one pretty cheap.

There's also a website where you can get an outgoing air ticket for very inexpensively. that way when you pass immigration you will have proof that you will be moving on. make sure you have Cash with you when you come in as well around $500 USD .

Bob Fom I would be VERY VERY CAREFUL recommending "onward" fake tickets . . .there has been a meeting of Phuket Immigration officers, and the topic at one point was centered on the "fake tickets" . .

Word for word: "Phuket Airport Immigration has also seen a surge in counterfeit or unpaid return tickets ‒ documents created to make it appear as though a traveller intends to leave Thailand.

"Many passengers create fake tickets by booking without paying or confirming their return flight," Col Rasarin said.

"We have strict measures in place to detect this. If a ticket is found to be counterfeit, or if payment has not been made, the traveller will be deemed to have not declared their innocence from the start and will be immediately deported."

Gregor Huettner interesting and thanks for the update.. I've been here a couple years now so I'm not into the newest and latest on entering the Kingdom.

2 years ago it worked. but I was never asked. now it's different I guess. time's changed.

Rene Ordman a very bad decision. AVOID "onwardtickets". The airline might accept these, but if Immgration is asking, and see the "fake ticket", you will be detained and deported on your own expenses

You apply for a 90 day Non-O visa before you travel to Thailand. You can then open a bank account and apply for a 12 month extension of stay

If outside Thailand you should apply for a non-O visa through the closest Thai consulate near you. There are financial requirements, which the Thai Immigration page will outline. The advantage to applying outside the country is it is easier to secure a bank account n Thailand with a non-O visa than it is without it. Then you can leave, facilitate the bank transfers and whatnot, and then apply for the 12 month visa. The initial visa will only be for 90 days. Or, you can fly over, get into the country on a visa waiver that could change from 60-30 days any day now, and apply for the retirement visa once you are here. You can also work with any number of visa agencies that will help facilitate the whole process and Greece the wheels for about $1500, visa fee included. If help with relocations, travel booking, and medical tourism. I am American, from Oregon and California, and I’ve lived here in Thailand for just about 13 years. PM me if you want any help or advice.
