Hi everyone, I will be entering Thailand on a 90 day Non O on 6 July. I intend applying for a 12 month extension based on marriage to a Thai national as soon as possible after that. I am married already and have had a bank account in Thailand for many years. The 400,000 has been in that account for over 6 months and all the other documents are in place except for an updated Kor Ror 2 and that's easy enough to obtain My local immigration office is Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat). Does anyone know when I can apply for the extension at that office? I've heard not until the last 15 days of the Non O and 45 days into the Non O. Can't get them to answer the phone to find out.
Answer summary
The user is set to enter Thailand on a 90-day Non-O visa and seeks advice on applying for a one-year extension based on marriage to a Thai citizen. He mentions having the necessary documents but is uncertain about the application timing at his local immigration office in Nakhon Ratchasima. Responses from other users suggest that applications can typically be made with 30 days left on the visa, with some offices allowing applications with 45 days remaining. There is a common understanding that Nakhon Ratchasima may have specific operational inconsistencies, and prior experience indicates that detailed documentation is crucial for the application process.

When we did ours at Korat I believe they had us wait until 20 days left. Maybe 15. But good luck. 👍 make sure all your documents are the right color, signatures match and look the same. Things are signed EXACTLY where they are supposed to be, and pray they like your map. I’ve been denied god knows how many times for very very very minute details

Cris Murl Thanks Cris, that's what I was fearing. I fully appreciate the information given by Brandon above but I've dealt with Korat long enough to know that they operate how they want. They once refused a friend's extension because his income came from his business in Thailand for which he had a work permit. They crazily insisted that his income had to come from abroad..........WTF? They have a very strange way of interpreting the rules, often mix them up and will not accept they are wrong. In this particular case, as in my TM30 attempt, it took a lawyer getting involved before they backed down and have made it difficult for him ever since. In typical Thai style, they don't answer the phone, their LINE doesn't work and they don't answer questions on their Facebook messenger.

Phil Wilson haha yes sadly that’s how it goes. I’ve done 3 marriage extensions with them so far. Every single one has been a nightmare. I’m honestly thinking of using an agent this time. I also live almost at the border of their coverage. So a 1.5 hour drive one way just adds more to it. Especially when something is wrong and I get the “come back tomorrow”.

Cris Murl Tell me about it mate - I'm 100km away. When they were forced to back down on my TM30 registration, they made me go home and bring my Tabien Baan. Every time before that they had accepted a signed photo copy. As expected, the b**ch didn't even look at it when I went the next day. My lawyer had made he lose face so I was punished for that.

Do you have a marriage certificate that has been translated, certified, and legalized?

Frank Zander he wrote that he can easily obtain a Kor Ror 2. This means that he married inside Thailand and the marriage was acknowledged and registered. For an application to a 1-year extension of stay based on marriage to a Thai wife, Immigration will always ask for a fresh printout, done on the local Amphur, of the marriage registry. If he married abroad, he would have needed to first get it legalized and registered inside Thailand, then the registry printout would be a Kor Ror 22 (note the difference between 2 and 22). The reason Immigration wants to see a fresh printout every year, is the fact that he theoretically could already be divorced, and just shows an old rose-bordered marriage certificate. The Kor Ror 2 and 22 printouts confirm that the marriage is still active

Nongnuch Kamdee Just to clarify that. What Korat want is an update of the Kor Ror 2 issued in the same year as the application. So for example, if you were married in July 2026 and applied for an extension in January 2027, you would need an update which as you say is a Kor Ror 22 dated in 2027. I don't know how pedantic Korat would be if say, you married in December 2026 and applied in January 2027 but what they told me is that the update must be in the same year as the application.

Frank Zander My marriage certificate doesn't need translating - I was married in Thailand.

Every immigration office in Thailand will allow a marriage extension when you have 30 days or less left. Some will allow 45 days or less.

Thanks for that. In no way am I arguing but Korat make their own rules up on just about everything so I want to be sure as it affects the timing of other plans. Every time I go there I have a fight about being able to do my own TM30 and I have to call my lawyer to speak to them. Next visit - rinse and repeat. It could be that the 15 days I'm thinking of is regarding extensions to visa exempt entries.

Phil Wilson do not get confused. You can apply for your first one year extension after the bt400,000 has been in your account, after you just entered on a non-O 90 day visa, for at least 60 days. Then you can apply for your first one year extension, with the rest of the required documents, pictures, and map. That is standard throughout Thailand. The confusion is when you are on any tourist entry, and want to change to a long term visa extension. Then you must have more than 15 days left on your entry, but in your case you are entering on a type O 90 day visa, and you already have your Thai bank account with the bt400,000. After 60 days you can apply. A few remote immigration offices might allow the 60 day account balance to not matter, and allow you to apply as soon as you have all the documents, pictures, and map, but those are very few. You can also do all the TM30 filing online, with no interaction with Korat immigration, other than maybe the printout after it is filed. If you have the correct documents, you can do it yourself online with no problem.

@Phil *******
why do you have to do your own TM30? Normally this is done by the person that owns your accommodation. If that's your wife she should do it, simple to set up so it can be done online.

Simply because I am allowed to do it. The rules only say that the person must be the owner, housemaster or hotel manager. I have a registered Usufruct agreement on the property and am therefore the Housemaster. Shortly after TM30 kicked off when all the confusion was going on with some landlords refusing to do TM30's etc. etc, the head of Immigration went on TV and said something to the effect of "of course a foreigner can register their own as long as they have a lease etc, the main thing is that they are registered so we know where they are". An entirely sensible approach that achieves the aims of TM30. Yet some offices, one being Korat, choose to ignore that.

Many offices have different rules for tourist extensions, but I've never heard of a single office that is less than 30 days for a non-immigrant extension.

But the initial application is only half the equation. You'll receive an "under consideration" stamp that is anywhere from 4-8 weeks depending on the immigration office, and you'll have to return to collect the full extension after that period. During this time, they may visit your home to do an inspection, to speak with your neighbors regarding the marriage, etc.

The local immigration office cannot process marriage extensions, hence the under consideration period to allow them to send it to the division headquarters for processing.

yes but you'll need a re-entry permit for the under consideration period.

Can I ask - I presume the under consideration period is stamped in my passport and they give me my passport back? Once they've made the home visit, am I able to leave the country whilst waiting for the full extension?

Thanks again, good info. I will have to find out how long their under consideration period is as the speed of obtaining the extension affects other things.
