What visa should we apply for when traveling to Krabi for a year to train Muay Thai and learn Thai?

Question

Hi!

Myself, my partner and our 2 year old will be travelling to Krabi in Feb 2024. We want to stay for 1 year and train Muay Thai but we will look at learning Thai at a certified school so we can get ED Visa.

We are from Australia and I’m just wanting advice should I book a return ticket or onward ticket to show the airline? Should we apply for ED visa before we go? Or should we just apply when we get to Thailand within the 30 days?

Any advice is greatly appreciated

The user and their family plan to travel to Krabi for one year to train Muay Thai and learn Thai. They seek advice on whether to book a return or onward ticket, and if they should apply for an ED visa before going or upon arrival. Responses indicate that obtaining a proper education visa (ED Visa) requires enrolling in a certified school first, as they provide necessary paperwork. Additionally, they can show a return ticket reservation or book a refundable one if needed for airline requirements.

Hi Carita,

I am Dutch and made the move to Krabi over twenty years ago. I am married to a Thai and living on Koh Lanta, Krabi province. We have an 8 year old daughter. I'd love to help you, answer any questions you might have concerning your move here.

In most cases you can show a reservation of a return ticket or book something you can cancel just in case they ask about it. You can travel to Thailand without applying for any visa beforehand. There are great language schools and Muay Thai gyms that can provide the paperwork for an Education visa. The benefit of choosing the language school is that you can learn online from wherever you are in Thailand. When it comes to Muay Thai you'd have to go to the gym to follow the classes.

You cannot apply for an ED visa just out of your own, your first step is to find a school, they will provide you with the appropriate paperwork, only then can you apply
