Border Runs on Visa exempt?

Can anyone advise on what would happen if a border run attempt was made with the new restrictions?

Arrived on 60 day visa exempt and then additional 30 day extension has been made whilst there

Can someone leave the country and re enter the same day or a few days later and get a new 60 day visa exempt?

A lot of previous years this has been done with a boat trip out and back again same day, unsure if this can now be done?

Know people can just apply for different visas in future etc, just asking for this occasion.

Asking for someone who is there and the 30 days extension expires in a few days and they’re unsure if return home or attempt a border run.

Thank you!
Answer summary
The conversation discusses the possibility and regulations around doing a border run after entering Thailand on a visa-exempt basis, especially after extending the initial 60-day stay by 30 days. It highlights uncertainties due to new restrictions and varying experiences from other expats. Participants mention the risks associated with land border entries, potential success with flight re-entries, and the optimal approach to travel to neighboring countries like Malaysia or Myanmar for this purpose. Several commenters caution that recent immigration crackdowns may complicate border runs, urging consideration of existing stay patterns over the past year.

I've never done this as I'm on a long term visa however as Immigration are reportedly cracking down on 'non tourists' I would think this might be seen as 'dodgy' by Immigration as a normal tourist is not likely to stay for the 60 days, get a 30 day extension then go to a different country for just 1 day and then return and try to stay another 90 days. This sounds more like trying to live in Thailand without the required long term visa which is what that Immigration are reported to say they are cracking down on. If you were to return to your own country for a few weeks and then return I could see this being accepted but what you are saying sound like what they are trying to stop. As I said I've no experience of this but this is from what I've seen the expat news and other reports on the Internet, I hope it's helpful.

From what I've read they are not extending a second visa, seems 150 days is the bench mark with visa on arrival. Tourist visa is the way to go and then that might not work

I will give you my experience of my successful boarder run last week. I entered Thailand visa exempt last year in August and stayed for 55 days. Returned to my home country for 6 weeks and re-entered Thailand on visa exempt in November of 2025 and requested 30 day extension and then a 7 day stamp. Ended up overstaying for 10 days due to my flight home canceled. New flight isn't until April. Immigration did not grant an extension based on my current circumstances they said I needed to leave the country and re-enter.

I did a boarder run to Maynmar with a company and I had zero issues. I had to pay my overstay fines and was stamped back into Thailand for another 60 days-without question.

You can go from

Hua Hin Via Ranong to Myanmar and back in a day

With an organised company

12 hours round trip

6.30am-6.30pm

5300 baht per person

For a 60 day stamp

From what I've seen 180 days in 1 calendar year is still possible. 60+30+60+30 but then it gets more complicated. Land borders are more likely to reject you but a flight re-entry is possible, especially if you use an agent.

Ryan James they arrived in December after Christmas.

I very much doubt they’ll use an agent, I think more wanted to see if people have been able to renter the same day and they previously did that before - they go Thailand every year between 4 an 6 months

TaupeKangaroo3731 if they came at Christmas 2024, have stayed 60+30 then I would almost guarantee that a trip to Malaysia, Laos, Vietnam or Myanmar would grant them another 60 days.

Ryan James it was Christmas 2025. Previous to that was March to May 2025 using 60+30

TaupeKangaroo3731 The concern is not if they can come back same day. The concern is if they can come back at all right now. It's not worth trying to do it on your own if they've already been in Thailand for 6 months during the last 12 months.

I'm not sure how successful you will be and I think it depends on where you're crossing I tried to do this in Cambodia but this was about 2 years ago and I was denied entry had he fly back, we just took a few days to go on a trip

Leonard Kingston Miragliuolo I think they said Malaysia

TaupeKangaroo3731 If they used a boat then the only 2 possibilites are Langkawi Malaysia, and Kawthoung Myanmar. I know there are agents around Koh Samui that do the Maynmar run, but I don't know anything about the Malaysia options for an agent.

Koh Samui has agents that go to Malaysia, Wang Kelian Immigration.

TaupeKangaroo3731 they didn't say anything about Malaysia I was referring from going to Cambodia from Thailand and then trying to come back to the kingdom again

That completely depends on the history over the previous 12 months. If there was another tourist entry with an extension during that time, I would expect problems.

If there was a tourist entry without extension 8-9 months ago, it would probably be okay since there was a large gap between the 2 entries.

Do note that a land border entry will likely not qualify for any extension.

If you're worried, you can use a land border bounce agency who will ensure you can get out and back in without any problems by preclearing you with immigration before driving you to the border.

can you recommend a land order bounce company?

That completely depends on where in Thailand. I only know of Bangkok based companies though, and because Cambodia is closed, it's a LONG trip to Laos now. It would probably be easier to travel to Chiang Mai on your own and use Chiang Mai Visa Run to hop up to Chiang Khong.

You might be able to find one in Kanchanaburi, I just don't know. But the one I know of that has a good reputation in Bangkok is

thank you. The 30 days extension has always been done. Some years doing a border run sheet this.

The last time they went they came back in May 2025 and did a 30 day extension.

TaupeKangaroo3731 May-August and then Dec-Mar sounds like a huge risk to try and do it again.

But sounds like would be a risk to attempt it and could possibly be denied and told to book there and then to fly back home

Thank you. Think there was some concern as when arrived got questioned about why no return ticket but got a 30 day extension. All so confusing all this!
Brandon ************
Brandon ************
TaupeKangaroo3731 it might be okay? It's going to be up to the immigration officer to make the decision. So it's not really going to be possibly to say with certainty
