Hi, my partner Kay and I have had a great 3 months in Thailand, we intend to return in November for 1 year minimum. We will be renting a house and would like to purchase a motorbike and maybe a car as well, what visas would we need to make it possible to purchase?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user and their partner are seeking advice on the type of visas required to buy a motorbike and potentially a car while planning to stay in Thailand for at least one year. Key suggestions include obtaining an OA visa, which is suitable for extended stays, and ensuring they have a visa that allows them to get a residency certificate from immigration. It is also noted that a tourist visa may not suffice for these purchases. Additional considerations include the need for a valid driver's license (with motorcycle endorsement) for registration and insurance purposes, particularly in Bangkok.

You can buy one no problem, with a passport and notarized residency letter from the embassy if you can't get one from immigration. The problem, especially in Bangkok, is getting it registered and licensed, as you must buy the mandatory accident insurance, and to do that you need a Thai motorcycle license. It is a part of the yearly tax and registration process. If your current valid driver's license has a motorcycle endorsement you won't have any problems, but it is doesn't it can take months just to get a time to take the driving test, and they do have motorbikes to use for a very small fee. The same for a car, as they are two different licenses. I'm on my second motorbike now, having put 40,000km on the last one just driving in Bangkok, and my second five year license renewal last year. Motorbikes are the only way to get around Bangkok with no delays because of traffic jams, if you were in a car...hehe.

I've never shown my licence doing registration renewal on car or motorcycle. Don't know where you got that from.

For purchasing either a car or bike you need a visa that allows your local immigration office to provide you with a residence certificate. Basically any one year visa will do. Tourist visa probably not.

in Bangkok the immigration office won’t issue a residency certificate (needed to buy a car or bike) unless you have filed a 90 day report. Which you can only do with a long term visa. You can still get one from your embassy.

In Phuket they’ll issue on any visa.

Not necessarily. Know people who have obtained certificate of residence with tourist visa or visa exempt.

Get an OA visa and work it for 2 years staying in Thailand.

What country passport do you both hold and what age are you?

Sorry I missed the last words “to purchase”. If the question is only about purchasing a car or bike then the visa you have may not matter
