Can I get an ED Visa to learn martial arts, and what are the re-entry rules during its duration?

Hello group. I have 2 more questions regarding the ED Visa. My husband mentioned something about getting the ED Visa to learn martial arts or the self defense visa. Is this something that can be done and is it the similar process of having to do the 90 single entry visa?

Second question. When doing the ED Visa are you required to do boarder runs? And are you allowed to visit another country outside of Thailand for a few days before you re-enter and get your stamp? Are you allowed to visit another country outside of Thailand on a 90 day single entry visa if you are doing the ED visa? I hope my questions are clear enough. So much to process. Thanks for any information.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The ED Visa allows individuals to study in Thailand, including martial arts, provided they enroll in an accredited school that can issue the necessary documentation. Once you obtain a 90-day single entry ED Visa, you can stay in Thailand for that period and extend it with documentation from your educational institution. You do not need to perform border runs on this visa, but if you plan to travel outside Thailand, you must obtain a re-entry permit before leaving to maintain your visa status.

The way the ED visa program works is you enroll in a school get documentation from them and go to a thai consulate in a nearby country to get a 90 day single entry ED visa. When you come back to thailand you'll get stamped in for 90 days. When that 90 days is running out you get more paperwork from the school that you take to the immigration office where you live and apply for a 90 day extension. You do that for the term of the school program (usually a year).

You do NOT need to "border bounce" on that visa AND if you want to go to another country you need to buy a re-entry permit from the immigration office before you go.

Thanks Tod. This really clears things up for us a lot. We will look into the school you mentioned as well.

The only self defense school I know that's approved by the Ministry of Education (so you can get a visa while you study) is the one up in Chiang Mai run by a thai guy named Jet.
