My family and I are coming to Koh Samui for a 6-month stay. What's the recommended type of medical insurance? Is travel insurance or a local/domestic plan better for a long-term trip? We need coverage for sickness and emergencies. Appreciate the advice!

TLDR : Answer Summary
For a 6-month stay in Koh Samui, it is recommended to consider travel insurance from your home country, which typically includes crucial benefits like repatriation for severe illness. Many travelers find that if they are healthy and under 50, travel insurance suffices for accident coverage, while minor medical issues can be handled out-of-pocket. Additionally, some banking options may offer travel insurance as a benefit. Alternatively, some suggest local health insurance with a deductible for effective costs and coverage.

Get a travel insurance in your homecountry since it includes repatriation, in case of severe illness.

Start by asking where you have other insurances, or check if your bankcards has travelinsurance as an option.

Health insurances ofte needs a health check before you buy.

Taking a local health insurance with deduction. This would be the effective both for cost and coverage. You will pay less while having a good coverage.

If it’s only 6 months I’d say just use a travel insurance from your home country. A lot of credit cards offer free travel insurance also if you spend for example $500 AUD towards your travel expenses.

Also depends on your age and health circumstances, if you are under say 50 healthy, etc I would just use travel insurance as “accident coverage” if you need a dentist or GP it’s cheap enough just to pay out of pocket if your travel insurance didn’t include it.

That’s my thoughts any way !
