My husband and I will be travelling to Thailand on an OA visa. We are from Canada. Do you have any suggestions regarding medical insurance? Can we purchase insurance in Thailand before we arrive?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When traveling to Thailand on an OA visa, it's crucial to have the approved medical insurance for entry, which can usually be arranged before leaving Canada. Options may include purchasing local insurance in Thailand or traveler’s insurance from Canada, which could be more economical. If staying long-term, consider the implications on Canadian medical coverage after six months. It's also advisable to check your embassy's website for specific insurance requirements for the OA visa.

the Non O is easier then the OA. You can apply before you leave Canada, the requirements are fairly easy to meet. You'll get stamped in for 90 days and can then apply for the yearly extension. When we did it we only needed the insurance requirement for the 90 days so we used a CAD company for that.

Bring a proof of income statement with you, you get the copy from CRA based on your last tax return. Once here, you go to the Canadian Consulate in Chiang Mai or Embassy in BKK and get an affidavit of income. If married, you can also get them to certify your marriage license so that one of you can be a "trailing spouse" so only one person has to show they meet the minimum financials. Then go to immigration with the letter and all other documents, pay 1900THB and get a year extension based on retirement. It was really easy to do. Currently there is no insurance requirement for the extension so you can get whatever insurance locally whenever you are ready for it.

We were able to use our Non O to open a bank account within the first month of arrival. While we didn't need it for immigration, it does make day to day transactions easier.

You can buy travelers insurance probably so much cheaper than local insurance.... How long are you staying also matters as after you are here 6 months you lose your Canadian medical. Many sell plans that include Canada that covers for emergency when you go home to visit or back until your Canadian plan kicks in again.

we’ve applied to extend our provincial insurance in Canada for 1 year. But I’m thinking it might be easier to apply for the tourist visa first and apply for the oa once I’m there

you can't get an OA visa inside Thailand, only from your home country. You can buy a Non-O visa inside Thailand for retirement, it's fairly easy but there are some financial implications. You need a Thai bank account and transfer into it 800k Thai baht from overseas, once it's there apply for the 90 day Non-O visa at your local immigration, make sure you have enough time left on your entry stamp

days required depending where you are. After 2 months you can extend this for 12 months. To apply for the extension the 800k must be in the bank for 2 months before you apply and must remain there for 3 months after, it can't drop below 400k at any point in the year. 2 months before applying for the next 12 months it has to go back up to 800k

As Canadians you do not need to put the $$ in a Thai bank account, you can get an affidavit from the Canadian Embassy in BKK or Consulate in Chiang Mai.

ah I missed the fact they were Canadian. They can indeed get an income affidavit if they wish to.

if you open in Canada and get the visa I'm not sure what is involved. We did our own paperwork here after we arrived in September and had no problem. Did it all within 45 days ... Never even had to do a border run.

The hardest was the bank account but then we had the tip to buy life insurance from Bangkok bank and then they will open an account for free.

If you have any questions go ahead and pm me....

You have to have approved insurance for OA visa for entry. List/link should be on your embassies website.

you can do that. You just need to do it before you get to Thailand. You are stamped in for how ever long your insurance is valid for. If you have no insurance you can not enter.
