What should I know about applying for a Paid Multiple-Entry Visa after a DTV rejection for teaching English online?

So, I wanted to give a heads up and also ask a question. I was denied DTV supposedly because teaching English online doesn't qualify... I applied through the LA consulate in the US, so this may not be the same for every office. My question is then about applying for the paid multiple-entry visa. Does anyone have any experience with this Visa? Is it more friendly to border runs (since you're actually paying)? I've done the research, and it seems that if you plan it correctly, you can stay up to 9 months, only leaving and reentering once or twice in that time. Although that may change now that they are going back to 30 days?
Answer summary
The user seeks advice on applying for a Paid Multiple-Entry Visa (METV) after being denied a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) application due to their online teaching profession. They inquire whether the METV is more accommodating for border runs, especially given recent changes to visa durations. The comments provide varied insights, including experiences with visa approvals and rejections, clarifications about working online legally in Thailand, and suggestions for alternative consulates. Some suggest considering the nature of employment (remote vs. freelance) as a potential rejection factor.

Something doesn’t really add up here.

maybe — and this is probably the real reason — it’s not considered actual full employment and looks more like freelance work.

And this is probably where the confusion started — the part that led to the rejection:

Are you actually a remote employee, or is this freelance work?

Because to a consulate, those are not the same thing.

My advice: since one of the easiest, fastest, and most DTV-friendly consulates — LA — rejected you, maybe switch to the soft power route instead, like Muay Thai or cooking.

Think of it as a health investment lol.

I dont think you were denied because you were teaching online. You are just presuming this. It would have been another reason in your application. Try contacting the embassy snd asking specifically why ?? Better than guessing if it was something you can change reapply

Teaching English online is usually ok but you have to make it very clear that you won't have anything to do with Thai entities or clients inside Thailand. If any of the people you teach are in Thailand you're going to be rejected

In answer to your part of the question about whether the METV is easy for moving in and out of Thailand, that wasn't our experience. My husband was approved a 6 month METV and we've been hassled every time we have come back in. It could be bad timing with their crack down on the visa exemptions but at one point, the IOs at BKK told him he had been in twice already and wouldn't be allowed in a third time. He be would need to get a different visa.

He was allowed in a third time and we were hassled over my new DTV instead 😂

BUT, that could be only because of his nationality too, but once they see we have money in the bank, we are let in every time.

I'm very sure a lot of people don't have any issues, but that wasn't our experience. So just be aware. Wishing you much luck!

Did you make clear and plausible you do not teach English to Thai students?

Strange indeed...as the Los Angeles Thai Consulate is known as being VERY helpful and friendly for the DTV visa.

How long have you been teaching online?

Suggest you read the posts about getting the DTV visa for Workcation as teaching online which are on this forum.

The variety of supportive documents the applicants submitted were helpful for the Thai Embassy or Consulate staff to understand what you are doing.

We have several others who have been issued the DTV visa for Workcation as a teacher online.

I'm not sure what you're talking about, but you need to pay a visa application fee to apply for a visa. It's the same for both DTV and METV. Both are tourist visas, but you're only allowed to work online with a DTV.

I'd recommend that you look into Vietnam or the Philippines. Or maybe stay a month in each of the SE Asian countries instead of getting a migraine trying to comply with everchanging Thai visa rules.

Good luck!

It does qualify, you can find several posts of approval from online teachers.

Teaching English online should qualify, at least others doing the same have applied. It's remote work, after all. Try another consulate. METV, which is what I believe you're referring to, has issues of its own.
