TLDR : Answer Summary
Upon arriving at Suvarnabhumi Airport for Visa Exempt entry, proceed to passport control to have your passport stamped. Follow the crowds and airport signage, which are available in multiple languages including Thai and English. You will need to go through immigration before retrieving your baggage. It is also advisable to check your stamp for accuracy upon receiving it.

Just follow the signs to baggage claim. They won’t let you exit the airport without asking for your passport and stamp the arrival date ( that’s what the exempt is, just a stamp with a date that tells you when you have to leave. If you extend, you’ll get another date stamp. Don’t follow the sign "visa on arrival" if you’re country is eligible to visa exempt. But after you get your stamp, check if the date is correct. Mistakes happen but problems with immigration is not what you want 😱
It's a reasonable question. Plenty of frequent travelers, who should know better, get in the queue for visa on arrival when they're actually using visa exemption. Enjoy your stay, OP!

If your passport is South African you're fine, but a Zimbabwean one doesn't qualify for vise exemption
