I have a work permit expiring June 20th . Should have no difficulties renewing with labor department except the cnx labor department says that physical presence in Thailand is required . That poses a bit of a quandary insomuch as there are no flights and even if there were as per previous exceptions one would need a valid work permit to enter the kingdom under the exceptions. The labor department says you must cancel your current permit upon upon expiration and apply for a new one when you re enter . I have a valid non b visa . I also still receive my Thai salary and of course pay taxes in spite of the fact that I cannot return to Thailand . It feels like a catch 22. You must go to Thailand to get a new permit which seems much more of a hassle when compared to simply renewing and you must have a work permit to enter ?

Any thoughts or advice would be most appreciated

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is facing difficulties renewing their expiring work permit due to the requirement of physical presence in Thailand, which is complicated by travel restrictions. They currently hold a valid non-B visa and continue to receive their Thai salary. Commenters suggest asking the employer for a temporary extension for the work permit and emphasize the importance of direct communication with the Labor Department.

Have your employer contact the Labor Department requesting a temporary extension for your work permit until you are able to return to Thailand. The Thai government this week said that they are aware of the expiring work permit problem. And your employer may request an extension.

Good Luck.

And before the next one thinks all is the same and start about a driving license i close the comments.

Please take some time and look at the blue book called Work Permit and then look at your passport.

Find the differences and stop call it the same.

Thoughts is that application forms and other forms need to be signed by the applicant. Not an easy task if you are abroad.

No idea, where you find the rules about entry of the Kingdom of Thailand, it is closed for foreigners, only Thai citizens, registered at the Embassy are allowed to enter Thailand on a repatriation flight.

I would say, ask your employer to visit the Ministry of Labor how to deal with this situation, in worst case they have to apply for a new work permit before you are able to get back into Thailand and as long as you abroad you do not need the Thai work permit to work
