DTV (medical) – how to structure TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) medical certificate for approval?

Hi everyone, I’m planning to apply for a DTV under the medical/wellness category and had a more specific question about documentation.

My case:

- ME/CFS for ~10 years

- Significant improvement only with TCM treatment at ChingLian clinic in Bangkok

- Already completed two shorter treatment visits (Jan + March-Apr)

- Planning a longer 3–6+ month treatment starting in June

Since this is a TCM clinic (not a hospital), I’m wondering how to best structure the medical certificate to improve approval chances.

Questions:

- What should the medical certificate include to be taken seriously by the embassy?

- How detailed should the diagnosis and treatment plan be?

- Is it important to frame it in a more “conventional medical” way?

If anyone has experience with DTV using non-hospital providers, I’d really appreciate your insights 🙏
Answer summary
This post discusses applying for a DTV (medical/wellness) visa under the category of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Thailand. The user seeks advice on how to structure a medical certificate for approval from the embassy, particularly given that TCM is provided at a clinic rather than a conventional hospital. Commenters share their experiences, emphasizing the importance of including detailed diagnosis and treatment plans, the need for proper documentation (like the clinic's license and appointment schedules), and a recommendation to consult the embassy for guidance on their acceptance of TCM. Additionally, some express concerns about the increasing difficulty in obtaining DTV visas for alternative treatments.

Curious what treatment you have been doing? Acupuncture? Something else? I also have ME/CFS. I go in and out of remission, depending on a number of things. Acupuncture helps me too.

You have a better chance with massage therapy. Get Ploy to write that you absolutely must get a daily special, otherwise you'll be depressed.

Many non-hospital medical providers are licensed through Thai regulatory bodies, and that includes TCM institutes. Request a copy of the clinic's license and submit it with your treatment plan in your application.

I think it is best to ask embassy first for this specific situation.

The fact that an institute is licensed is not a guarantee for acceptance.

Soft power is menat for Thailand promotion, and I am not sure Thailand wants to promote TCM.

I think the purpose of the medical scheme is to support Thai-owned medical providers. This person isn't applying with a course, so the Thai culture component doesn't apply. Many have qualified with orthodontic or other treatment plans, which are also imported from foreign sources, even though they don't label themselves that way.

Anonymous participant I don't remember the name, but a group member here reported a successful application for the medical DTV with a treatment that included acupuncture. This shows that alternative treatment is eligible at at least a few embassies.

Those are different categories. The medical route is not subject to requirements to promote Thai culture. I haven't seen any reports of DTV applicants receiving feedback that their medical soft power application needs to represent Thai culture.

It is primary meant to promote Thailand, not to support Thai owned bussiness.

If that was the case they also should accept gyms and all other trainings.

The fact that medical treatment plans are imported is not relevant, as long as they see it as something Thailand should profile with.

Yes it is an alternative medicine clinic, i.e. tradional chinese medicine clinic. Wish there is someone with a real life experience to share it

I have a soft power medical DTV.

As far as documentation, I submitted:

-doctor’s report with diagnosis, summary of previous treatment, and upcoming treatment plan

-appointment schedule for 6 weeks of appointments. Longer is recommended. If applicable, your doctor should state in their report if your condition is permanent and will require long term treatment.

-receipts showing all appointments have been prepaid

I did this at a well known “name brand” private hospital that any Thai official would recognize. I’m not sure how it would play out for an alternative medical practitioner.

It really depends on the embassy. Some is so strict they will only accept hospital. The best way forward is to talk to the embassy you plan to apply at

Be prepared for the Thai Embassy or Consulate to possibly issue you the METV multiple entry tourist visa instead of the 5 year DTV visa. The METV will get you up to 8 months stay in Thailand. Which is enough for your medical care treatment plan.

I'm saying that it's more difficult now than before to get the DTV visa for medical care. Be sure you have supporting documents FROM the doctor and hospital outlining the treatment plan AND ongoing Post medical appointments needed.

TCM medical care in a clinic???

I doubt it will be accepted l.

When TCM means Traditional Chinese Medicine, I am not so sure it will be seen as soft power for Thailand.
