What proof of departure do we need for the METV application regarding the initial 60 days and subsequent stays in Thailand?

I am helping my English bf with his METV. We plan to extend the first 2 months to 3, leave for 5-7 days, and come back for another 60 days. Should the proof of departure be after 60 days, 90 days, or for the final return trip back to England?
Answer summary
The post discusses concerns about the proof of departure required for a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) application for Thailand. The original poster plans to stay for an initial 60 days, extend their stay, leave for a short period, and then return. They seek clarification on whether proof of departure should be for the initial 60 days, the extension, or the final return to England. Various comments provide insights, indicating that proof of onward travel is generally required before the initial 60 days ends and emphasize the importance of having valid flight documentation for immigration purposes.

From other posts I have read about this, some people with a METV have been denied a second entrance after extending their first entry to 90 days. With that in mind, I would consider going to Vietnam at 60 days, then come back and be admitted for the next 60 and then extend that stay.

Jim McGowan I don't get it. They issue a 6 month visa but have an issue with people trying to spend all 6 months (other than a border hop) in the country?

Justin Baker it gives multiple entries over a 6 month period and, being a tourist visa, is not meant to be used to "live" in Thailand long term

Justin Baker It's a visa that's valid to use for 6 months but it only gives you a 60 days stay each time you enter Thailand within those 6 months

Justin Baker it is not actually a six month visa, it is a multi entry tourist visa, maximum 60 days per entry for six months, made for people who want to travel around neighboring SEA countries and come back to Thailand as a base before returning home. It's not meant for someone to stay in Thailand six months a year. A six months stay is not tourist, that's a resident and you need the appropriate visa to be a resident. At 180 days in Thailand you are also required to file income taxes in Thailand.

Jim McGowan oh wow! Thanks for that! That works too. I wonder if I could get that confirmed upon initial entry to Thailand? Or is that asking too much of them?

Laurie Norton admission into Thailand is up to the immigration officer you are standing in front of at the time. They will have information from your passport and admissions to Thailand. What they are frowning upon is people trying to live in Thailand on a tourist visa. I have been getting non immigrant visas for twenty years now. The only time I didn't have one was this year as I found out about a biopsy in December then I went to book a flight and I found a good fare departing on New Year's day. I didn't have time to get a visa online with all the holidays that the Thai Consulate was closed for during those two weeks, so I arrived visa exempt and had a return flight for 90 days. The immigration officer was not happy with that. She said to get the proper visa, your Thai wife won't save you next time. I ended up changing visa types in Thailand to a non Immigrant and then got a one year extension of permission to stay. I already had Thai bank accounts, which is necessary to change visa types in the country.

Many embassies want to see justification for multiple entries. That means a flight into Thailand, a flight out of Thailand within the 60 days the visa will grant, and then another flight back into Thailand.

If you're planning on doing one 60 day entry, and one 60+30 entry, I would do the 60 day entry first. That way you can get proof of onward travel within 60 days for the visa application, and also because immigration is much more likely to ask questions if someone comes for 60 days, gets an extension, and then leaves and returns after a short time. Even people with METV have been pulled out of line and interrogated for doing exactly that.

Thanks for that helpful advice! So are proof of departure before 60 days AND proof of return to Thailand required upon initial entry, or just departure?

Also, I am filling out my English bf’s METV application and it requires proof of departure. Would that be the departure before the initial 60 days is up or his final departure back to England? The US one didn’t ask for that but I will have proof available of both departures just in case.

That being said, I can show my intended final departure plan out of Thailand but being a retired flight attendant who flies standby, I can only list for a flight three months in advance, so it’s not a confirmed booking. If I show them my retired flight attendant ID and a printout of the policy, will I have a problem or should I just break down and buy a full fare ticket now?

Sorry for lol the questions!

Thanks in advance.

Sorry I think you answered above that the METV application should show departure within the initial 60 days. But I would appreciate your addressing my other concerns.

you should be able to provide flights rather than actual tickets. If they want to see tickets they'll ask for them

It would be the first departure that they're looking for. And if you don't or cannot upload the trip to Thailand, the first trip out, and the trip back, have it ready if they ask you for it after you submit.
