Hello all

Need some urgent advice for a friend that has got herself in a challenging situation.

Short version

US citizen entered with single entry non 0 volunteer visa on 31 Jan 2019 at Nongkai. Worked in Mae Sot with a work permit expires in 9 another nine months.

However she finished up with the charity and came to Chiang Mai a week ago.

Now the problem, she has just realised her visa expired 30 April.

She needs to come back to Thailand for up to another month.

Any "helpful" advice on how to deal with the situation, would be appreciated.

And yes it really a friend ๐Ÿ˜ฃ

TLDR : Answer Summary
A US citizen in Thailand overstayed her Non-O visa by a week and needs urgent advice on her options. Suggestions from the community include quickly flying out of Thailand to apply for a new Tourist Visa while paying a daily overstay fine at the immigration checkpoint. Another option mentioned is making a visa run at the Mae Sai - Tachiliek border, provided she hasn't already used two 30-day visa exempt entries this year. It's also brought up that she may or may not need to cancel her work permit upon returning.

Thanks so much guys. I had thought that leaving on a flight asap might be the best/only option, but best to get it from the experts :) We've organised just that, and she can stay with friends the other end for a few days, and de-stress. Again thanks so much ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Will she also need to cancel the work permit if she hasn't already?

Well spotted (y) If she hasn't, she can do that when she gets back.

Seeing as she's still on the original 90 day entry of the Non-O visa she entered with, she can just leave the country without canceling anything with immigrations visa-wise..

She might be able to bounce out and back in at the Mae Sai - Tachiliek border crossing and just pay her overstay at that border when she bounces out. That'd give her a new 30 day visa exempt entry stamp (as long as she doesn't have TWO 30 day visa exempt entries so far this year).

I'd call one of the visa run companies that lug people up to that border from Chiang Mai and ask them if they can do it with people who have an overstay.

Tod Daniels Often have officials boarding the buses heading to and from Mae Sai checking documents. Admittedly they are looking for people from Myanmar without the correct paperwork mostly but it could be riskier for her than an airport departure

She needs to follow the advice of

above. Leave ASAP at the Chiang Mai airport for direct flight outside Thailand to try to get another Tourist Visa. The fine IS 500 Thai baht PER DAY OVERSTAY.

Safest option is to get to an airport, fly outside of Thailand, pay the 500 Thb a day overstay at Immigration checkpoint. Get a new Single Entry Tourist visa and come back into Thailand.
