Driving License Extension - DLT Krabi

Today i extended my car and motorcycle license in Krabi at the Provincial Transport Office.

I got a 2 years extension. (Tried to convince her to give me 5 years but was not possible. I think it might depend on the person you happen to go through)

Booked an appointment online via DLT Smartqueue app. There was a lot of availability to my surprise. No weeks long waiting…overall it took 2.5 hours today from parking lot to hold my new licenses in my hands. I could have saved 1 hour if i would have watched the 1 hour long video online before…. But it wasnt in the written requirements. so yeah, i had to sit and watch a thai video and wait 😀 I recommend watching it beforehand. DLT Learning website, need to register and sign in.

Cost:

310 Baht for both licenses (200+100+5+5)

150 Baht for medical certificate (local doctor)

Additionaly i needed a certificate of residence which you get from the Immigration Office. This one i got for free (20mins effort at IO).

I had 2 copies each:

- Passport biodata

- Passport last entry stamp page

- Medical Certificate

- Certificate of Residence

+ old licenses and original passport

also provided my visa printout but wasnt required.

Had to go through the quick reaction and vision test. Easy.

In the end a very easy and pretty quick process. Same steps like when you get a new license / convert home license and IDP to thai license.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The process of extending car and motorcycle licenses in Krabi at the Provincial Transport Office can be relatively quick and straightforward. An appointment can be booked through the DLT Smartqueue app with plenty of availability. Applicants typically receive a 2-year extension, although some may obtain a 5-year extension depending on specific circumstances and the office's policies. Costs include approximately 310 Baht for the licenses and a 150 Baht medical certificate. Required documents include a medical certificate, a certificate of residence, and copies of the passport and previous licenses. A quick vision test is also part of the process. Recommendations include watching a related instructional video online prior to the appointment.

Rock Goulet The DTV isn’t intended for people to live in Thailand for the entire 5 years though. A Non-Immigrant B or O visa is often only valid for 90 days but they receive 1 year extensions of stay which can be done indefinitely (so long as all requirements are met).

Is it the same process in getting the first licenses? Instead of old license you bring an international driving license?

you need the IDP = international driving permit and your home countries license… otherwise you will need to get a full new license. also possible and requires a few more steps. but still fairly cheap.

i think yes. you would get a 2 year license too. they would want a copy of your stamp which is basically your „visa“. the limiting factor would most likely be the certificate of residence. some immigration offices do not hand those out to short term tourists. so need to check that.

Dtv is a tourist visa therefore not entitled to a 5 year licence

depends on the office. others got 5 years in other provinces… and the lady sounded like: you need a 12 month stamp and not a 6 month 😅

you should definitely call the DLT offices and let them know they don't know their own rules.

it's mixed, depends on the office. Elite is a tourist visa and they get 5 years in some DLT but only 2 in others. Some were told 2 but then got 5 going through an agent.

Elite is legally a long term tourist visa. It's *because* it's a tourist visa that some DLTs will only give 2 years, this used not be the case but it became an issue a few years ago. It's mixed, some offices will do 5, some only 2. Some will do 2 if you go yourself but an agent can get 5.

This is from Siam Legal, but if you ask Elite/Thailand Privilege yourself, they will tell you it's classified as a tourist visa.

"As a tourist visa, Thai Privilege Visa holders are not permitted to work for any company based and located in Thailand."

I think it depends more on the office you apply at. Some give out 2 year extensions, others 5 year ones...but more and more are only granting a 2 year extension to existing Thai license holders, if they're on a DTV.

you need a 1 year visa to get the 5 year extension.

Even though I have that, I was on a 1 month "checking renewal docs" stamp at time of my DL renewal so only got 2 years again.
