TLDR : Answer Summary
To convert an international driving permit to a Thai driver's license, you'll need to provide several documents. These include: - Your home country’s driving license - International Driving Permit (IDP) - Passport - Residency certificate from immigration - Medical certificate - Some DLT offices may require appointment booking and you might also need passport photos. The process involves visiting the Department of Land Transport (DLT) where you may need to take a basic reaction test, depending on your situation.

Not sure of your country of origin. With my USA DL I’ve got the Thai’s without any testing besides the eyes test.

Some foreigner’s DL granted the 60 days driving in Thailand privileges, or at least that I was told while I was there . If you’re not intending to stay over the allowable time you may just use your.

Thia driving test

You dont need an IDP for a Thai drivers license, you need your home Country drivers license or just take the test.

Valid licence from your own country, a valid IDP, a certificate of residency from immigration, a doctor’s certificate, 2 passport photos, a copy of your information page on your passport, a copy of your last visa or extension in your passport, and some DLT offices you will need a appointment online. But always best to visit your local DLT office and ask them directly what documentation you will require.

This is just out of curiosity. What is the benefit of having a Thai drivers license versus having your home license and an international driving permit?

You can only legally drive for 90 days on a foreign license and IDP before the local license is required (this is for many countries).

Also you can use your Thai license for many things like checking into flights, checking into hotels, and general ID around Thailand.

Wow, I never knew that. Thanks for the info. I used an agent to open a bank account when I was here on a tourist visa. I now have a long-term visa. This same agent offered to get me a Thai driver's license. We did not discuss the price yet. Do you think it's worth it to use an agent to avoid doing all of the leg work and running around? She said I would not have to do anything basically.

I got mine in Sa Kaeo province in 75 minutes for 205B. I got my resedence certificate from Immigration (free, took about 25 minutes) then found a clinic to get the medical certificate for 100B (blood pressure tested and a few questions for the tick boxes on the pro forma). Out in about 10 minures. Took these plus my UK licence, IDP and passport (with Non-O Visa) to the DLT the next working day, registered, did the 3 tests (braking/reaction, colour-blindness and depth perception) and that was it, no test, no video, nothing else. Easy and legal, valid for 2 years then renew for 6 years.

I guess it depends on the price. For me it only took maybe 4-5 hours total across 2 trips to the DLT.

Went to immigration and got my residence certificate, got my health certificate, went to DLT with all paperwork and they gave me an appointment a couple of weeks later to return. Done for about 1000 baht total (500 baht for residence certificate, 100 for health certificate, 400ish for licenses)

Is it like when other countries "exchange" your home country license with the new county license or do you have to actually take written tests and road tests?
Brandon ************
@Alex ********
if you have your license from home and an IDP then there's no written test.
Alex *********
@Brandon ***********
what about road test?
Brandon ************
@Alex ********
you don't take anything but a reaction test if you have an IDP

thank you very much for your help and great info! 👍👍

You can pay an agent 5,000-10,000 baht mate.

You won’t pay 4-500 baht I paid. I can tell you that now, otherwise you would have done it already.

Go to the DLT website.

Then to the DLT Office, within the 3 months the International drivers license is valid, with the papers mentioned at the DLT website.
John **********
Residence certificate, medical certificate, passport, home driving licence and international driving permit. In some areas you also need to be on a non-immigrant visa
Nathan *********
You just need a residency certificate, medical certificate and ID, license and IDP and passport

@Aake *********

I just got mine last November unless the rules have changed

The international driving permit is issued in your home country as a copy of your driving licence. On its own incant help you. You need to take your homecountry driving licence to a DLT office (department of land transport) and fill in a form and take a simple test.

@Colin *********
