Hello. Ok, I have a complicated question about My ED Visa when it comes to traveling.

I am going back to Australia in May, then planning to go to Myanmar with my girlfriend. At first, I thought I would just meet her in Myanmar, but the ticket prices from Perth > (connecting in SG or Malaysia) to Myanmar is more expensive if I were to go to Perth > (connecting Malaysia) > Bangkok > Myanmar. Also the transit times are the same roughly just more planes.

I know I have to go to immigration to notify and pay when I leave Chiang Mai Thailand, but there may be a 4-5 hour period when I'm in Bangkok before going to Myanmar which is not a connecting flight, can i go into BKK and visit friends then go back to the airport without doing anything with my ED Visa?? What is the procedure here? Thank you in advance!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring about traveling from Thailand to Myanmar, specifically focusing on the implications of having an ED Visa while experiencing a layover in Bangkok. They are concerned about the need to notify immigration before leaving Chiang Mai, and whether they can leave the airport to visit friends in Bangkok during a layover without affecting their visa status. Additionally, they are considering flight timing and possible risks related to travel arrangements.

And possibly be prepared for an officer questioning how you can be travelling so much when you are supposed to be attending classes.

Also, there is a flight that is meant to land in BKK at 15:30, and my GF's flight to Myanmar is at 16:10, I thought that might be risky since its so close together I might not make it, thoughts? (This is why my initial post was talking about being in BKK for 4-5 hours to and not take this risk, but if everyone thinks its not a big risk i'd rather do that)

Could only work if same airline and you staying in the transfer area. The plane (even if punctual), landing, passengers getting off, and you, even if allowed to, running to the departure gate from Arrival (through transfer area) in 20 min. (as the gate will probably close 20 min. before departure)... It just won't work! Book another flight and meet in Myanmar later!

Even if you can check in online no bags, And if your flight to BKK is a little late, bus gates? Long walks. 40 minutes no way..

Unless your airlines let you do through-check-in to your next flight, I'd think it'd be a super high risk to make it in 40 minutes, especially if you have claimed luggage..... And recently many airlines close boarding 10-20 minutes earlier.. Maybe other more frequent travelers would have different and more accurate views, though..

whether you can make the flight or not is another issue entirely, and that one is your decision. a 40 minute window between flights is NOT a lot of time.

make sure you have a re-entry permit

@Tod ********
Ok. So essentially you have to come back and forth 4 times within 90 days for the multiple re-entry permit to make financial sense...

@Brendon *******
then your re-entry permit will be valid for the length of your current extension.

@Brendon *******
you say you're on an ED visa, do you go to the immigration office every 90 days and get an extension for 1900baht?

@Tod ********
Are there any expiry dates? Or is it for th entire length of your visa with the multiple?

Thanks

you are a wealth of knowledge :๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜Ž

@Brendon *******
, re-entry permits are sold as a single (1000baht) or a multiple (3800baht)

Make sure when you come into thailand to fly to burma that you don't stamp into the country during the wait for the plane, stay in the international departures/transit.

So re-entry permits are more than 1 time use? Because i will be back from Myanmar within 4 days, and i'd hate to be stuck because i already used my re-entry permit.
