A day of stress🫣

Non-O Visa based on retirement.

Optained my resident certificates from Immigration, took 7 days, x3 , 2 for different banks SCB and Kbank and last one for car purchase.

Each certificate was marked with the bank and location i stated. No dramas at immigration ever though my local Immigration has really bad reviews, I faced non of the issues others have had.

That was a plus, secondary to what was stated i did not have to pay for the certificates. πŸ‘πŸ™

now the fun :

SCB shopping mall, having many more than the requested documents ( previous email contact email SCB).

Lady was pleasant but said "No", I then showed the email which also included the branch name stating I could open. She took documents and email to the Manager and returned with a yes. 30 minutes later all set up. ( for my 800k)

Each bank gave me a list of requirements, I doubled down on the lists

Kbank

From the offset, after viewing my documents, said πŸ‘Ž did not believe my sign copies of my Condo ownership Canote was real and was pushing documents back.

I pulled out the Original chanote, and showed my name as owner. She then gave up the fight and proceeded to open. πŸ‘

Both banks accepted different documents with Kbank insisting on the Chanote.

I think it would have been harder at Kbank if I was renting 🫣

Now this big issues I had....

Uk Bank... failed 15 times to send international SWIFT payment. On the chat they could not sort...

Back home on the laptop, went through the whole thing again. this time it worked ......

But wait......

BANK locked call england fraud department.!!!!πŸ˜’

£1 per minute through to fraud call centre £41 pound later 😳 All was sorted. Changed to PAYG Sim, to keep mu UK number.

Reason i used Swift bank transfer and not Wise is because peace of mind that all bank codes will meet my very strict Immigration Centre, and everything else will be done via Wise.

Some information here might help others. Email the help centre of the banks and request what is needed and which bank near to you.

If doing Swift perhaps contact you Bank first to let them know not to flag the transaction.

Would be nice to know which immigration office you were using 😳

OP
Gerar Teuben Nonthaburi Bangkok, quick and easy, although location is a bit out of the way every thing was smooth, even when I asked for 3 copies. Only thing I found was the TM18 form I downloaded from their website was not actually the current one they used, so had to re-write on the new form which they gave me.

Known to be strict, but if you have everything in order its fine.

I had no issues with a Kbank branch in Chiang Mai.

I didn't even need a residency certificate they accepted my long term lease on the condo I'm renting and the other usual documents to open a Thai bank account.

I just did it that way to see if I could and it worked out.

You can never die wondering!

OP
Doc Trevor i would imagine if you went to 10 different places each one might be different, seen many reports of rejections, SCB was slightly easier than Kbank in the same Mall Nonthaburi Bkk

Paul Ed No not at all I just walked past the first Kbank up the road where I live with all the paperwork and I just walked in and asked if I can get a bank account opened with the documents I already had minus the residency certificate and it wasn't a problem my condo lease was good enough for them and I got it sorted.

I guess If you don't ask you don't get sometimes you get lucky in life!

OP
Doc Trevor As a more low key area where I live, maybe they not deal so much with farangs so much. Non the less the accounts are open and the 60 day begins 😊

Why all the drama it's all pretty simple stuff. Get cert/ letter from immigration go to bank open.account they get the app working on your phone, transfer money in from overseas acc. That's it.

Graeme Drake it clearly wasn't simple in the OPs case. He had everything he was asked for and still the banks pushed back.

Paul Singlehurst-Ward maybe but you would wonder why they are doing that. maybe on the retirement visa, some questions, but marriage and fronting with wife and letter from immigration why problems, maybe its tied to the area where you are going to bank, meaning Pattaya compared with say Maha Sarakham. It sort of looks like maybe one day the Thais will link visa and tax department with long stay.

OP
Graeme Drake It seems simple yes, depending if the bank put up a fight on opening which both banks did all be it SCB less of a drama.

Uk bank transfer was more of a nightmare with them locking my account, and of course the exspensive call to UK

Paul Ed Obviously opening a bank account must have changed since I did 5 years ago, I thought the Immigration letter/cert was a no problems

Good perseverance and well done πŸ‘

Many just give up

OP
Ant W Tailor Its to easy to give up, from the offset that was why I emailed their customer support asking requirements and where to open.

Email does state there maybe other requests.

First bank maybe not sure and needed Manager approval.

Second Bank was 100% looking for rejection.

Crazy part is you get a Government document stating the name and location of the bank and they still look for saying no, maybe rendering certificate useless.

TBF never had a problem with swift transfers from Lloyds bank in the UK via Bangkok Bank London into my Bangkok bank account in Thailand. Cheap fees, best exchange rate and always done in 24 hours or less.

OP
Steve Greir It failed constantly from the app, would not send me the verification call, I thought my UK number had an issue, From home on the laptop everything went through, even the call came. Then boom ! locked 🀣. But as it was a new thai bank account setting and large amount could have been the reason.
