Newbie question: What is the difference between the 400,000 and 800,000 baht needed to be kept in the bank? Planning on retirement in the next few years. Married 14 years to Thai and have a child. Thanks for any information you could provide. All the best to everyone!!!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The 400,000 baht requirement is applicable for extending stay based on marriage to a Thai national, while the 800,000 baht requirement is for extending stay based on retirement. For both scenarios, there are alternatives that include monthly income or pension verification.

As you are over 50 years of age and married to a Thai national there are different options.

You can get the Non Immigrant O visa OR based on being married to a Thai National OR based on being over 50 years of age.

When you like to stay longer in Thailand you apply at the Immigration Office for an Extension of Stay, and there is a small difference.

For people married to a Thai National they need minimum 2 months prior application 400.000 Thb into a Thai bank on their name

For people using based on over 50 years of age it is minimum 2 months prior application 800.000 Thb until 3 months after into a Thai bank in your name and the rest of the year not less then 400.000 Thb.

There are alternatives with monthly income with letter from Embassy or monthly deposits. 65.000 Thb for being over 50 years or 40.000 Thb for being married.

If you're not thinking to do anything until the next "few years" I'd say take any information about how things are now (especially after this covid-shit-storm) and toss it out the window.

NO ONE <- as in not one single person knows what the new requirements might be "post-covid" compared to what they are now.

While it is prudent to do research before you need to do tasks I'd say you're getting the cart WAY before the horse on this one at this time

You don't need to have the lump of money in your account as long as you have been sending from overseas to your Thai account 65.000 a month for retirement or 40.000 a month marriage or 12 months thats also accepted by most immigration Dept's. This should officially be from a pension or even regular income like rent from what I understand. If you miss a month you they won't process your extension.I have two friends on retirement and marriage extensions who told me this.

I second that Paul. I am on retirement and as long as you can provide documentation of a regular income for the year and what is in the Thai bank totals 800k all is good. But that is only on yearly renewals after the first application.

The 400K THB is the requirement for an extension of stay based on marriage, and the 800K is the requirement for an extension of stay based on "retirement".
