Does anyone know what is happening with Thai airways? I see that there was some kind of court action due to be conducted on 17th August. Friends had previously booked flights and seem unable to get a refund.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Thai Airways is currently undergoing reorganization bankruptcy procedures, with a court process that affects its operations and refund capabilities. Customers who have booked flights have reported delays in receiving refunds, as the airline owes money to various creditors and is not processing refunds quickly. While the airline intends to honor existing tickets, there is uncertainty about when normal operations will resume and refunds will be issued, with some customers advised to expect delays of up to 180 days. The situation is evolving, so it is recommended for travelers to keep updated via official channels.

They are in the first stage of reorganization bankruptcy, with the court deciding on their reorganization plan with all their major creditors. The government has already sold their shares so they can get rid of the union. Well, they transferred the shares to another entity with close government relations. They were supposed to start flying again on Aug. 1st, but have now set a new date in October. One thing that really affects expats is that Thai Airways holds all the first class international airmail contracts going out of Thailand with the post office. With no planes flying, well lots of you have experienced the new normal of trying to send mail out of Thailand.

Wouldn't touch thai air with a barge pole . Goverment owns most of the shares , they owe money to a few countries they cant even fly too as they will keep their plane , they were stuck in Germany the other week for 8 hours + because they couldn't pay for their fuel.

Tickets are still valid and can be exchanged when flights resume. They are merely reorganising not bankrupt.

As I understand it they filed for bankruptcy and want to restart in a new company with restructured debts. They owe your friends money/flights, but as a result of this procedure nobody gets anything at the moment. I doubt refunds will ever happen, best they can hope for seems to be they will respect they still owe people the flight. They said before they will, but a Thai official coming back on his word would not be the first time.

It has been said they will refund but they will be delayed by the ongoing legal proceedings.

I think the hearing started on the 17th but won't be concluded by then. It's been filed in various countries also not just Thailand.
