What insurance company is best for retired people in Thailand?
Answer summary
The best insurance company for retired people in Thailand can vary based on individual needs, age, and preexisting health conditions. Many expats suggest companies like AXA, Pacific Cross, and AIA. It’s essential to consider whether you need comprehensive health cover or can rely on self-insuring, given that healthcare costs can be manageable in Thailand for generally healthy individuals. There are mixed opinions regarding the necessity of insurance, especially for retirement visas, with some asserting that it is required while others believe it's not. Personal experiences emphasize the importance of researching and understanding the claims process, especially concerning preexisting conditions.

So..... I had my insurance from Canada through Manulife. I had had it for 10 years and never used it. I had to have skin cancer removed (nothing too bad), so biopsy, surgery, and localised radiation therapy. They didn't cover a thing. I just switched to 15 million, zero deductable, health and life insurance through Krungsri at about 30% the cost for the same coverage... we will see how it is.

I use Muang Thai Life (MTL). Since I have a friend who works in the insurance claims department at BDMS, I always consult them first to confirm how fair and efficient an insurer's claims process is. Because I am healthy with no underlying conditions, my only concerns are sudden major accidents or infections. Therefore, to minimize my premiums, I opted for a 30k deductible, especially since I already have compulsory health insurance in my home country of Singapore. I also try to avoid international companies because their premiums are usually about 30% higher.

I filed my first claim last year without much of an issue. Because the claim occurred within the first six months of my coverage, they understandably processed it with extra scrutiny. Overall, I appreciate MTL because they have built-in clauses to prevent abuse. With people living longer these days, insurance costs will inevitably rise, so it is very important to me that a company actively prevents claims abuse to control escalating costs. I recently had my second renewal and actually saw a reduction in my premium—this is the first time in my life I have ever seen a health insurance premium go down!
Don *******
Don *******
Albert Han One big difference between Thai companies and many international companies is that the Thai ones can increase your premiums based on your individual claim history. So if you have some sort of ongoing health problem you can expect your Thai premium to rise very steeply. I'm not aware that there are any limits to the potential increase. Companies like April France are specifically prohibited from doing this. They can only increase premiums for all clients by age band, so you will never pay more (or less) than someone else your age. This also explains why your Thai company gave you a discount.

As I understand it, as one gets to a certain age, the limiting factor on any insurance one buys at an older are the preexisting illnesses that cause the policy to not cover. So, make sure you review this aspect carefully before purchasing any policy. I wish you good luck. Make sure you post your findings.

I use Pacific Cross, not cheap but not mega expensive. I live in Udon Thani but took out my insurance about 7 years ago in Hua Hin when I lived there. I can supply the agents contact if you wish (it’s AA insure). I wanted the insurance mainly for any big issues and I am glad I did. Earlier this year I went to the hospital with stomach pains, I was operated on just a few hours later as my appendix was about to burst. A week later I returned to the hospital for my stitches removal and to get the result of the biopsy report….. A few days later I had part of my colon removed due to cancer….very very lucky…..

Yes, I had been paying for years already and yes I had a 40,000 baht deductible, but I am soooo pleased I had the insurance..

Everyone’s choice though…

You will get many people tell you how good their health insurance is based on how little they pay. I'm with AIA, I pay top dollar for top cover. So far I have not needed to make a claim. I will not tell you how good AIA are and I will not recommend them as I don't know. You cannot judge insurance by what it costs or by what they promise. The only way to really judge how good insurance is, is by the claims process. Did they pay up? Was it simple? Did they not pay or refuse to pay for some things you thought were covered? Before taking anyone's' advice or recommendation ask them about the claims process, if they have not claimed they have no idea how good or bad the product they are paying for actually is.

Tim Dee April France is subject to French law which is quite strict and consumer-orientated, so I would expect them to be fair. There is a subsidiary in Thailand that seems to operate under Thai law which may not be so consumer-orientated.

April France seems to have increased premiums massively every year for the past few years, outside of normal age-related increases which in themselves are substantial.

Also April France seem to apply a percentage excess if you use the Bangkok Hospital group which is one of the most popular with expats (and probably the most expensive). Not sure if the local April does the same.

A question I have,

In a claim situation, do the insurance companies check back and investigate your medical history in your home country?

So could you forget to mention some condition or event in your non-Thai life which will later be found out and bite you?

Rudi Carrell I think it's quite likely that insurance will become a requirement for new O visas before very long. But I doubt that it will be retroactive for existing retirement O visa holders as many simply can't qualify for insurance as they are too old or have too many existing conditions. Even those who can qualify may find the cost too high and would move away, and the net result to Thailand would just be fewer retirees and less foreign income. The whole point of these visas is to attract people to live here and to spend foreign money.

Mikael Olofsson What you pay now at 63 is irrelevant. Look at what you would be paying if you were 73 or 83. That is when you might be claiming. No point having insurance now if you won't be able to afford it later when you need it.

Willism69_ Well I don't know how much others pay but for me as a 63 year old it's around 53 000 baht a year outpatient, not the cheapest, not the most expensive one but somewhere in the middle is my guess for pretty good cover.

For myself no pre existing conditions that I'm aware of, and yes when you get older insurances will get more expensive.

I have some savings but not enough to pay up at hospitals if something serious would happen, so for me and my situation it's a must to be well secured.

From what I've seen Safety Wing seems to be one of the best. But whatever you do, don't listen to the people who suggest you don't need it. Not only is it a requirement for most retirement visas, but anything could happen at any time. It's not worth the risk. You can typically get it for less than $200 a month even when you are in your 60s.
Don *******
Don *******
Dean Riggott Don't look at the price in your 50s or 60s, look at the price at 70 or 75 or 80 and beyond. That's when you will probably need it, and that's when it often becomes unaffordable. Many people pay for insurance for decades and never claim but then have to cancel later in life simply because the premiums are too high. And of course the insurance companies are very happy about this as they get rid of the bad risks.
