What does the switch to eVisa for Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam mean for travelers?

When people are saying cambodia, laos and vietnam are switching ro evisa. What does that mean? That people can only apply from their home country? As on the evisa site, doesn’t seem to be able to be done in another country…

Edit: So looks like Laos, Jakarta + Taipei are the go to for those in Thailand and people are hevauly favouring Taiepei + Jakarta.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The transition to eVisa for countries like Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam means that applicants must apply online for their visas instead of visiting the embassy in person. After applying, individuals receive a PDF document rather than a physical sticker visa. Applicants indicate their location during the online process, and the application is routed to the appropriate embassy for processing.

It means instead of walking in and applying and handing over your passport, you now apply online and get a PDF file to printout instead of an actual sticker visa. You state your current location on the evisa website and your application is directed to the appropriate embassy for processing.

which would be your entry stamp into Laos and your hotel booking. Proof of residence is not the same as proof of residency.

hotel room Booking is accepted as residence for application for most Thai visas, such as Non O, Non B, DTV, and single entry tourist visa. ONLY exception is if you hold a passport from a restricted nation requiring added 4 weeks processing time.

for EVISa? That is even more terrible because you would need to stay in Vientiane more than 2 days

Yes you can expect lol longer stays in those countries who are on the Evisa online application system for Thailand. It's the plan for the entire Thai Foreign Ministry of Thai Embassy's and Consulates to be using the Evisa online application system.

don't know of any restrictions for European passport holders applying in Laos. Check their website visa services page. You just need to show your Laos entry stamp and your hotel booking to show proof you're in the country.

The may restrict based on passport and eVisa website location. That should not be be a huge problem. Just hop into the home country plane and apply at home country. This is 21st century people.

I agree with you. They are asking for proof of residency yet other people are suggesting they just popped into a SE Asian capital for easier visa processing.

There is also the visa fee to consider. In Aus it is AUD600 and yet in NZ it is an eye-watering NZD2000. Mistakes on the application will be costly.
