What does my Thai wife need to apply for a visitor visa to Australia to stay with my mother?

Hello everybody 👋

My Thai wife and I plan to visit and stay with my mother in Australia for a week.

Has anyone done this before?

I understand my wife needs a letter from my mother to say she can stay with her to get a visa.

Is a mother in law considered family to do this?

I don’t know whether my mother has to prove other things like her finances if my wife stays at my mother’s house.

I know my wife has to go to Bangkok to the Australian Emabassy and make an appointment.

It’s a bit complicated trying to follow the process on the Australian government website.

Any help would be appreciated.

Myself I have a New Zealand passport so I don’t need a visa.

You'll need an invitation letter from your mother for a place to stay in Australia. And another from you saying you will provide financial support for the trip and ensure she obeys the visa conditions. And any other information you can give about her circumstances that would ensure she leaves, job, cars, property and family in Thailand. Good luck.

She needs a tourist visa you need proof of real relationship and means to care for her, you have to show why she needs to return to thailand

Good luck with that, because your wife is from SE Asia she will be red flag as not to return, so you will need to prove that she will return, you will need to show employment and income, a good way is to use an agent for you might have to make up a story for they don't like the truth. Another visa is the sponsorship visa, good luck with the application and I hope it works out so she can visit.

As she is your wife and not just (another) girlfriend, it shouldn’t be too hard and I never heard of a letter needed for a wife.

The past two times my (Thai) partner applied for a Visitor (subclass 600) visa, we went to the trouble of getting family invitation letters, however they were not needed. I recall the Aussie website was quite clear, albeit tedious, once you select the visa type you need. Your Aussie Embassy can provide specific advice, however the application process focuses on the applicant demonstrating means and intention to return home (eg - bank account statements, credit card details, payslips, employment letter, air tickets).
