if the stamp in your passport says:

admitted until xxx

does that mean, you can stay in Thailand until xxx 23:59 or does it mean: leave before xxx?

A friend of mine was charged by Immigration with overstay 500 THB for one day.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The stamp in your passport stating 'admitted until xxx' means you must leave Thailand by 23:59 on that date. It is advised to go through passport control and exit the country before this time to avoid any overstay fines. Although fines may be waived for stays under 24 hours, it is safest to leave a day or two earlier to avoid complications.

You won't be charged for an overstay of under 24 hours when you fly out <- they waive the overstay fine if it's under 24 hours, and if it's over 24 hours you pay for 2 days <- 1000baht

Just leave one day or two before that to be on the safest side. Don't make things more difficult than they are.

why? You can stay until no longer permitted.

because if you are flying your flight might be cancelled. Eg right now the airbus 320 flight cancellations

@Jerdian *********
Now that's a fair reason indeed. But there's nothing 'difficult' about leaving on the last day.

@Bart *************
By 'difficult' I meant 'risky' in case your flight is cancelled or whatever may happen.

You need to go through passport control and get stamped out before 23:59. It doesn't matter if your flight is after that.

that's what you'd expect, yet we keep reading reports from some the the date printed on the flight ticket is what matters. I'm not saying it makes sense. I'll say it does not. But that's what we see, at least sometimes 🀷

yes .. it happened to me. I argued that I checked out of Thailand in time but since my flight was after midnight, they still charged me 500 bath.
Tod *********
@Jan **********
they couldn't have charged you because you stamp OUT after you check in for your flight, so you either stamped OUT of the country before 11:59PM or you didn't

@Tod ********
of course I checked in well before midnight, and then I also stamped out clearly before midnight, and my flight was 1.05 am. I was already 1 day over ( which was free) but they considered it to be 2 days over since my flight was after midnight. (That's what they told me) So... Accordingly they charged me 500 bath. This was a few years ago I must add.

i did this once checked out at 23:30 for 2am flight and were no problem on last day stamp. Btw i heard 24h overstay usually fee waived too. Also can be badass officers always πŸ˜…

I don't know what to say other than this must have something to do with an early check in time, for instance I don't think you're going to be let through passport control before midnight if you have a 4:00 a.m. flight. Regardless my understanding is it's always been the time you stamp out.

xxx 23:59 you have to cross the passport check point
Ellie *******
you can stay until 23:59 on the day on the stamp without being fined for overstay or stamped mentioning overstay.
