TLDR : Answer Summary
To obtain a 30-day visa extension in Thailand as a U.S. citizen, you need to bring your passport, 1900 baht, and potentially additional documents depending on the immigration office. It is recommended to have proof of accommodation (like a TM30 form from your hotel or landlord), as well as a photocopy of your passport. Immigration offices may have varying requirements, so it's good to check in advance and consider visiting a less crowded office.
A copy or screen shot of that TM30 that your hotel or landlord files for you is required at many offices. Other than that and your passport and cash, the forms to fill in will be available at your immigration office. Take them and your passport to a nearby photo copy shop who will know all the paper work copies and can do the required photo for you. They know what you need and will help
Best to do this at a smaller office, somewhere with very few foreigners OR somewhere like Samui. Avoid Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Pattaya. Huge crowds and lots of paperwork including TM30 requirements.
