TLDR : Answer Summary
To take your car from Thailand to Laos, you need several documents including the 'blue book' in your name, a vehicle passport (which can be obtained from the Transportation Department), proof of insurance, and copies of relevant pages from both your blue book and the car passport. The vehicle owner must travel with the vehicle and carry necessary documents such as the owner's book, passport photos, and paperwork obtained from the immigration website. Ensure that your vehicle's road tax is up to date, ideally with at least 30 days remaining before your trip. Upon arrival in Laos, follow proper entry procedures at the border, which involve obtaining a visa and ensuring your vehicle is processed correctly.

blue book and purple international car passport. Take photocopies of the relevant pages in both books (owner information and latest road tax payment) and all the information pages in the international car passport booklet. You'll need 2-3 copies of each.

All other forms such as the TM2, TM3 and TM4 forms can be filled out at the border, but if you print them out at home and fill them out before arriving, you'll easily save 20-30 minutes and won't get carpal tunnel syndrome.

Although it's not a firm rule, but make sure your road tax is up to date, with at least 30 days remaining before leaving the country. Since you can renew your road tax up to 90 days before it expires, make sure you do that before you leave the country with the car, even if it's just for a short trip.

The car passport is generally issued within 2-3 hours, depending on which land transport office you use. It's best to use the one at Chatuchak. Others may require proof of address, which is another nuisance, involving either immigration or your embassy and could take days or weeks to request.

Not sure what the TAT is smoking, but limited day return travel near the border aside, it's not possible to freely cross the Thai-Myanmar border by car. Never has been. A tour is required and right now it's just not possible. However, Mr. Vichet, who runs a caravan tour company is planning his first Myanmar self-drive tours since the end of Covid, in May. He'll be taking his group up to Kengtung. Kengtung just opened up for Thais, not sure about foreigners. I guess we'll know in due course.

There is a process for obtaining a passport for your car, Iโ€™ve seen one for a car however unsure of process to obtain one. Another process is single movement, go to DLT office and request a letter showing you vehicle tax ect is paid, the vehicle owner has to travel with the vehicle with the owners book, blue book, take passport photos and passport, the forms they get you to fill out at immigration can be downloaded from the immigration website, the paperwork is to export a vehicle from Thailand, on arrival in Laos you need to drive to the far right side, park up go get your visa, then drive through vehicle entry to be processed entry, during this time you park for insurance, 3rd party personal
