Question: what documents are required (other than the 400K in the bank) to get a spousal visa? Any specific process or "unusual" things to expect?

TLDR : Answer Summary
To obtain a spousal visa in Thailand, you will need certain documents in addition to having 400,000 THB in the bank. The requirement may vary depending on whether you apply from a Thai embassy abroad or from within Thailand. It can be particularly challenging if your marriage is not registered in Thailand.

Depends. Are you asking about getting the visa from a Thai embassy or from within Thailand? It can be tricky in Thailand if your marriage isn't already registered in Thailand.

If it's registered in Thailand, is it easier to get a visa? Easier than a retirement visa, which I know is twice the price?

have you already have a Thai bank account? If not it might be challenging to get one now. Marriage Visa requires less money hold in bank 400k around 3 months but more paperwork than retirement visa. Retirement visa requires more money in bank 800k and can’t drop below 400k. You can opt for 65k monthly method later on. Less paperwork. So you choose which one is more suitable for yourself.

it's not twice the price, all in country purchased visas are 2000B, it just has a different financial requirement for your funds

retirement visa is much easier. Many people that are married to Thai women (like me) get the retirement visa to avoid the difficulties. Go to your local immigration office to get their list of requirements as every office has different requirements. If it's the 800,000 baht that's making you choose the spouse visa, you can switch to the monthly 65,000 baht method at the second extension and withdraw the 800,000.

it's always best to get the visa before you travel to Thailand if you can. Will save you a lot of time and travel to immigration offices
