What are the requirements for applying for a Non-O visa and the two-month bank fund seasoning rule in Thailand?

Discovered something enlightening today at Jomtien immigration. I was helping a friend apply for a Non-O visa. He deposited 800k in his thai bank account on March 17th, prior to his arrival on May 3. The Non-O woman told him to come back on May 17th because the money had not yet aged two months.

I was surprised to learn that the two month aging rule is applied to initial 90 day Non-O applications in Thailand. This means it is impossible to show up on a 30 day visa exempt, open a bank account, transfer money, and apply for a non-O all within a 30 day visa exempt stay. A 30 day extension wouldn't help either, because you have to apply at least two weeks before your admitted-until date (according to the woman in jomtien). Seems you have to travel to another country to wait it out, or arrive on a tourist visa and do a border bounce when it expires.

I'm curious if other people have run into this snag, or if this is particular only to jomtien. My friend was advised on other forums that the 2 month aging only applies to visa extensions, not the initial 90 day non-O.

O-A is not an option for my friend.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion highlights issues with applying for a Non-O visa in Thailand, particularly regarding the requirement for funds in a Thai bank account to be aged (or seasoned) for two months before submitting the initial 90-day Non-O application. Users share experiences indicating that this requirement is applied inconsistently across different immigration offices in Thailand, with some offices (like Jomtien and Chiang Mai) enforcing it strictly for initial applications, while others (including Bangkok) may not require it until renewal. This poses challenges for those arriving on a short-term visa, as they may need to leave Thailand and return after the funds have aged, or utilize an agent to navigate the requirements effectively.

I returned to England last year for personal reasons and my wife at the time asked for a divorce which wasn't unreasonable since it seemed I might not be returning.

I have now returned and want to remarry my ex wife which I thought would be fairly simple but the local ampur is telling me I need to get about ten documents together some of which I have to get from the British consulate in Bangkok, have them translated into Thai and certified! These then have to go to the ministry of foreign affairs in Bangkok for approval?

I have maintained my Thai bank account and have held over
*****
0 BAHT in it for over 3 months.

I am only on a tourist visa at the moment but want to change this to a marriage visa if I can get over the hurdle of a marriage certificate first!

Any advice?

I still have my yellow house book and id card.

I thought the whole point of the 90 day was to give time to open bank account and season the

00 for two months. It seems I am wrong and my office insisted the money had been there for three months prior to renewing my extension. If the rules were the same everywhere it would help even if they are dumb. Foreigners who have more than one home or rent in several places must have a hell of a time.
Paul *******
@Nick ***********
I can't help you with that, but what does surprise me is this claim that the initial application doesn't require seasoned funds. That's new to me.
Paul *******
@Nick ***********
I thought it was 2 months before and 3 months after (for retirement extensions) so yeah that's the purpose of the initial 90 day visa.
Nick ************
@Paul ******
you are right. BUT, if my office says three months and I make a fuss and prove them wrong I have no idea what the outcome for the future would be but not good.
Jeff *****
all interesting

What she meant was the 800,000baht have to be in account for 2 months before any further paperwork advancement.

Language barrier, that's all. šŸ‘Œ

I still think it is better to use a visa agent the first time. Then do the renewal every year by yourself. Yes I know it will cost you a lot more than doing it yourself but no hassles. And you wouldnā€™t be writing in this form.

I got my 90 day Non O in my home country before coming to thailand, so that i have the 3 months to get the money in the account etc.
Anthony *********
@April **********
You cannot get Non O in your home country. You have enter Thailand on a Tourist Visa for 3 months to get it and you need to deposit 800k baht into a Thai bank account. Outside of Thailand you can only get a Non OA Visa with funds in your countries bank account and need to also get a 100k USD health insurance policy requirement.

I agree ā€¦ recently got my 90 days non-O visa from Thai embassy in Los Angeles through a visa attorney in Bangkok ā€¦ I donā€™t know anyone in Thailand šŸ˜‚ and everything is legal ā€¦ when I arrive in Bangkok then attorney will help open a bank account so I can deposit the required 800K
April ***********
@Anthony ********
yes you can, im not in the US, ive literally done it with the London Thai Embassy. My non o is based on marriage but both marriage and retirement intial 90 days can be done in my home country.
Paul *******
I thought this rule applied everywhere.
Bob **********
@Paul ******
no Jomtien
Steve *******
Apparently it's only Jomtiem Immigration that applies the 2 months seasoning for the Non Imm O visa. Others offices there's no seasoning required.
Thomas *******
@Steve ******
, sorry, but very wrong.
Steve *******
@Thomas ******
How is it wrong? Name another office that requires the funds for a VISA to be seasoned for 2 months.
Dave *********
I don't get why you need an agent if you can legitimately place 800k in a Thai bank account?
Charles ***********
@Dave ********
Agents are useful for people who can't be bothered / are too busy to do the research, or are hopeless with paperwork.
Bob **********
@Dave ********
you donā€™t if you can get it in a bank 2 months before applying for the non-o in jomtien
Dave *********
Charles ***********
@Dan *******
The 2 month seasoning only applies to the extension in Chiang Mai. The op's problem is that Jomtien applies the 2 month seasoning to the initial Non-O application.
Dan ********
@Charles **********
Ah,that seems unnecessary.
Rob ********
Just use an agent, everything done same day. I can't believe people would fly out and back in with all the expenses of doing that. I came to Thailand on visa exemption from Australia . Yes an agent cost about $28,000b and your bank account is opened the same day and you can start using it straight away
Jim ***********
Hua Hin immigration actually help you. I done myself 90 day and year extension speak no thai. Meet criteria, job done āœ”ļø.

One agent asked 43k, told me 800k needs be banked.for year. I laughed and walked out.

Agents fee pays my years health insurance.
Igor ***********
our agent in Chiang Mai charged 24K for 2 people. She opened bank accounts and did 1 year extension retirement non-O
Neil *******
Same same for me at Jomtien, it doesnt take a genius to work out why they make it so hard doing it by the book. This is the first curve ball they throw at you, there are many many more to come. Although i think it is wrong to accept it is like that, you will save your self a lot of wasted time and stress by accepting TIT and pay an agent or ask IO while holding your wallet in your hand and ask if there is any way you can overvome these problems
Neil *******
@Jackie **********
, agents want more than yhe stanard bride (a margin) or how would they make any money?.

Llast year it was
*****
, the cheapeast agent i found (if you had the 800k) was
*****
, that was for first non o and one year extension based on retirement, this is often confused with a one year renewal which is cheaper
Neil *******
@DeWayne ******
, never offer as thats you commiting bribery, they will say how much.
Jackie ***********

@Neil ******
they are all definitely on the take, thats for sure. But they'll want just as much as what you'll pay an agent. Agents have been jacking up their prices also. Used to be, if you already had the money, an agent would run the paperwork for you and it would only cost you 12k. Now they want 26k, just for shuffling paper and dealing with the bureaucracy.
DeWayne *******
@Neil ******
so is holding your wallet in front of them the trick? That's the part I struggle with is how do you offer the special payment?
Igor ***********
We came on 90 days non-O, immediately opened our bank accounts and transferred 800K baht. In 2.5 months our agent arranged everything and we received 1 year retirement on-O visa .
Bob **********
@Igor **********
if your using an agent you donā€™t even need any money in the bank
Bob **********
Yes itā€™s as if she wants you to

Go to an agent she did the same to me and friends of mine itā€™s the only office that does this that Iā€™m aware of I thought the 90 day non-o was giving you time to get all sorted but thereā€™s too much money being made
Stuart *********
The actual rule is that for the initial Non O visa issued within Thailand is that there is no seasoning requirement. The funds should be seen as coming from overseas but some offices may not care.

However TIT and each office will have their own say on what is or isnā€™t allowed. Thatā€™s why we normally advise people to visit their office and ask for their specific requirements.
Richard *********
Put the money in a Thai Bank< head over to Phnom Penh with ur bank book an apply for a Non O visa> as it does not be seasoned > Use an agent ( I recommend Cina Travel on street 130 near riverside or Luck Lucky motorcycle on Monivong)

Take 4-5 business days
Jim ***********
I went to immigration Hua Hin asked requirements. Was told needed money seasoned by immigration guy but he said his friend upstairs can sort me 'special ' visa.... done 30 day extension as this took me past 60 what he said for seasoned funds. Went back applied 90 days myself and honest immigration lady gave me row for doing 30 day extension told me I wasted money didn't need it as they didn't require seasoned funds.
Alex *******
@Jim **********
So just to confirm, Jim: Hua Hin does NOT require seasoning of the funds for the initial 90 day Non-O visa, only for the annual extensions afterwards? Correct?
Jim ***********
@Alex ******
yes not needed
Jim ***********
Not needed for 90 day but need for year extension

There are good and bad things about every country. There's a lot more that's wrong with Thailand than just its bureaucracy, but there are also a bunch of good things too.
Jim ***********
Always thought the initial 90 days was " always under consideration " crazy rule this. IF 800k not been in 2 months reject application is sensible way. But This is Thailand.
Todd *********
Painful process and utterly ridiculous. You have to be pretty angry at your own free time to fight thru this process.

This is why agents are thriving business in Thailand

this is why I'm using one. The money they charge, to me, isn't a waste but insurance all goes smoothly.

Yes that's correct the initial 90 day Non-O visa has to have the 800,000 in the bank 2 month before applying,I did it in Bangkok in January 2021.,better to fly out other country then fly back in again
John **********
@Andy *****
only a couple of immigration offices insist on this. Most don't
Sean ********
Bangkok doesnā€™t require the 2 month period for the 90 day non-o, only for the year extension. Still have to have the 800k baht in the bank transferred from a foreign entity before applying is all.
Charles ***********
@Andy *****
only in SOME immigration offices
Andy ******
@Charles **********
in all as far as I am aware unless use a agent
Chris *******
@Andy *****
no not all offices.
Charles ***********
@Andy *****
Certainly not in Chiang Mai as I applied for a Non-O there.

No need to use an agent if you're organised and do your research.
Andy ******
@Charles **********
so you managed to apply for Non-O without having 800,000 in Thai bank ?
Charles ***********
@Andy *****
No. At Chiang Mai you need the 800k in your bank account when you apply for the initial Non-O, but there's no seasoning period. It could have been deposited in your account the day before you apply for the Non-O. At Chiang Mai the 2 month seasoning only applies to the application for a one year extension.
Andy ******
@Charles **********
ok mate I understand now šŸ™
Dimitris ************
I did it on the initial 90 day non O after the Korat immigration advised me I had to do a 30 day extension first and come back to apply
Dan ********
Yep same in Chiang Maiā€¦.I arrived in Chiang Mai mid March,got a driverā€™s license,bank account and deposited 800k,then I flew to Oz to wait the required 2 monthsā€¦and now Iā€™m flying back to CM on Saturday to complete the process.
Stuart *********
Yes they have that rule in Jomtien. One other office too. Canā€™t recall which. Possibly Samui.
