TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion covers important aspects of the marriage visa in Thailand, primarily the Non-Immigrant O visa, which expats married to Thai citizens need to consider. Users share insights about applying online or at Thai embassies, as well as experiences related to marrying in the U.S. versus Thailand. The conversation highlights the challenges of securing a marriage visa and suggests alternative options such as retirement visas, discussing financial requirements and documentation needed for approval.

Public officials in Thailand have, according to the law, very wide powers. And in addition to the requirements listed on the Immigration Bureau's website, they will probably require proof of residence and it cannot be a hotel or the like. Which documentation they need depends if you are renting or not. But normally it is, among other things, a copy of the "Blue book" and a copy of the ID card of the house owner.

"In the case of retirement:

Criteria for Consideration

Must have been granted a non-immigrant visa (NON-Immigrant Visa).

Must be 50 years of age or over.

Must have evidence of monthly income of no less than 65,000 Baht or

At least 2 months prior to the filing date and at least 3 months after being granted permission, an alien must have a deposit in a commercial bank located in Thailand of no less than 800,000 baht. After being granted permission for 3 months, an alien can withdraw the said deposit and must have the remaining balance in the bank account of no less than 400,000 baht or

Must have an annual income and a deposit in a commercial bank located in Thailand with total sum of no less than 800,000 baht as of the filing date. The said deposit must maintain in the bank account prior to and after the permission is granted and the withdrawal can be made under the same condition in the Criterion (4)."

Marriage visa ara a pain. If you actually live with her (not my case) and the local immigration office is easy going, it's still a pain but not too bad.

When I was shopping for visa agents to handle my marriage visa they were quoting me 60,000, but the retirement visa is only 10,000. Ultimately I decided to do back-to-back tourist visa for the next year until I am retirement age.

Can someone tell me all about the retirement visa from Canada , I understood you don’t need to put 800 K in a Thai bank account but can show bank statements of 60 K a month ?? Yes over 50

I have heard it is better to marry in the US than in Thailand, assuming you are American. You will get 90 days, I think, after she arrives to get married after which she can apply for a green card. You can fill out the application yourself … plenty of YouTube how-to videos. It may take well over a year for approval. You can, of course, get easily married in Thailand if being married is the top priority, but married couples are often denied entry into the US. Not sure if marrying in TL offers any advantages , unless you are worried about her being westernized after she arrives ….
