Visa question!!

I am moving to Chiang Mai from the states at end of May and when I be staying for 6-9 months. I am currently teaching English online but am possibly wanting to teach English in a classroom in Thailand. I’m honestly so confused as to which visa I should apply for. I’ve been told to apply for a multiple entry tourist visa but I can’t find any information on the internet about it.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user seeks advice on the best visa option for moving to Chiang Mai for 6-9 months while possibly transitioning from online teaching to classroom teaching. Comments suggest that a tourist visa does not allow work, and recommend either a single-entry tourist visa or a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) which is available at Thai consulates in the US, as well as the possibility of applying for a student visa while looking for work. There are also considerations regarding financial requirements and the importance of having the necessary qualifications to obtain a teaching job and work permit.

Have you looked at the pay? Most government schools pay 25-30,000 Baht a month. Less than $1,000 USD. Some private schools pay more, some around 60,000 baht, especially in Phuket.

Either get a single entry (60-day) tourist visa or fly in and take the 30-day no-visa entry. Either of them can be extended for another 30 days.

.

Once you are here you can decide what you want to do.

.

You can work on-line and stay as a tourist (6 months to 1 year without a problem) or you can find a classroom job and change to a non-B visa and work permit.

.

If you are hoping to get a regular classroom job then bring your original degree, transcripts, a state or FBI check and an open mind (this isn't the same as home).

If you don't have a degree then you won't be getting a work permit. Join the rest of the digital nomads in CM.

B.Ed and State certification as a teacher?

You will have NO PROBLEMS getting a proper job with visa and work permit if you want it.

On-line work is also decent and you can get pretty good fiber connections here for cheap. I have
******
mbps and pay 900 baht/month (unlimited data).

Thanks Dave, I have a bachelors degree in elementary education so that’s not an issue. I’m just not 100% sure what the best option is for me but I appreciate all the suggestions!!

Keep in mind the thai consulates in the US that sell the 6 month METV require a bank statement with $7000 USD in your account.

if you can't meet that requirement just get a single entry tourist visa before you come here.

You can always apply for a student visa and then look for work that way, then once found cancel the ed visa and get the Non-O....the ed visa will give you the 6-9 months you’re looking for in country without having to leave every 30-60 days...

I mean she could just add it to her student debt...but you can’t officially work on that visa either...

@Jer***
, I was waiting for you to mention the thai elite visa ;) :O :P

@Tod ********
it’s just an option

of course applying for a student visa means they're also studying something the required minimum hours a week too ;)

I say the 6 month METV will get them thru 9 months of stay here with minimal discomfort AND seeing as they're going to be up in Chiang Mai they can easily border bounce at the Mae Sai - Tachiliek border with burma.

The 6 month METV is sold in the following thai consulates in the US;

Chicago, Los Angeles, New York & Washington DC.

Did you look at any of those websites?

@Kirsten ******
there is a FB page for job in TH, not remember the name but search "teacher in thailand" or similar

@Kirsten ******
you aren't gonna be here 6 to 9 months on one single entry tourist visa. :/ The most time you can wring out of one is 60 days plus 30 more so 90 all in .

Get the METV before you wing your way here. Several of those consulates I mentioned do visas by post so you're okay.

@Kirsten ******

@Kirsten ******
You're talking about the honorary thai consulate in Coral Gables and they can't sell METV

@Kir****
, umm, how would I know if YOU can find a job in 60 days in thailand? :O

I'd say get the 6 month METV because it will buy you the most time in country to find a job.

@Tod ********
okay. Do you know if I can do that on a single entry visa?
Tod *********
@Kir****
, yep, come here find a job, get documentation from the employer, go to a thai consulate in a neighboring country and get a 90 day Non-B visa.

@Tod ********
that’s what I’ve been told before too. That the employer will mostly handle that?

I know I can’t work on a tourist visa but I was told that if I got hired at a school, the school would help me get another visa and work permit?
Tod *********
no, but they can come here, find a job and then switch to a non-B visa
