Is a 90-day tourist visa standard for teaching jobs in Thailand, or should I apply for a work visa instead?

HI! Please forgive a basic question from a newbie. We are heading over soon since I have a teaching job, and my school has given me a load of documents and instructed me to apply for a 90 day tourist visa... is this standard procedure, that will later be converted into a work permit? Is there no special work visa that I get initially? TIA

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about the process of obtaining a 90-day tourist visa for teaching in Thailand, questioning if this is standard practice or if there is a dedicated work visa available. Responses highlight that the necessary visa for teaching is not a tourist visa but rather a 90-day Non-Immigrant Type B (business) visa, which can later be converted to a work permit. They emphasize the importance of applying for the correct visa with documentation provided by the employer.

Because that part you posted are the basic requirements for ALL types of Non-Immigrant visas and then for your specific one a Non-B based on teaching there are further requirements that the school met by sending you that pile of paperwork.

I see it in yellow, just wondering why my school is directing me to get the other one...

Read the section in yellow Non-Immigrant B (business) visa

Read the parts for teaching;

What thai consulate are you going to be using?

In Rome. This screen grab came off their website, and was sent to me by my school.

You need two things to work legally here, the correct visa (which is NOT a tourist visa) and a work permit. In order to get the correct visa, the employer gives you paperwork and you apply for the visa at a thai consulate.

Yep, thanks :) I just didn't see anything here that said business, so wasn't sure if this was the correct one.

notice where I mentioned a 90 day Non-Immigrant Type B visa in my response to you?

I believe your school has given you a load of documents and wants you to apply for a 90 day single entry Non-Immigrant Type B <-business visa before you wing your way here from the thai consulate in your country. ;)
