Heads up on double nationality

Hello everyone

I have shared my experience applying for DTV from Nepal.

What I didn’t share was that I have double citizenship and this was questioned during the interview also. I didn’t mention it because I didn’t think it was relevant to everyone. However, coming into Bangkok last night, I was pulled aside to be questioned. There were many others there scrutinized. I waited about 40 minutes before they even got to me. When they did what they questioned once again was my other passport.

They asked why I have two. I said I wish I had three 🙂

My current passport also happens to be new - as old one expired. This too raised some eyebrows.

At the end, I have told them that I had moved to the country I got a citizenship from and was married to a citizen for many years.

I am a middle aged woman, with a long life lived and left 🙂

After that they didn’t ask any questions. I was not questioned like others I witnessed.

Unsure why this is an issue - but here you have it.

Mildly rough landing but got my visa till May 🙂

My second passport is not from such a first world country as my DTV - so I suspect that’s why I got extra questioned

Yes i am a dual citizen, and o have used both passports many times over the years in Thailand and never been questioned in it until earlier this year. The IO did not wantvto admit me, which was ridiculous, so eventually was interviewed by senior officer. He was quite aggressive at first, but I pushed back quite firmly, explaining that I had done nothing wrong, and had never hidden having two passports, at different stages having held long-term visas on each, so why the big heat now ? They would not give me an answer but did chill and relax a bit when i pushed back at them. Eventually I told them i needed and wanted two (needed - because i travel a lot, and in my old job used to cover 2,3 even 4 countries a week) and wanted - because if i ever lose or damage one, I have back-up.

It was weird, because they suddenly just relaxed and said no problem and let me through. Never been queried again since.

good to hear they left u alone after that

This year both when I first entered on visa on arrival then for my dtv then entering bkk this was the main topic ?? So strange

PastelParsnip8198 i think the increasing use of biometric scans on entry, exit and visa applications is making connections between different passports held by same person, whereas they never made such connections before.

I did mention that I have two citizenship in my application. No problems at all so far (did 3 border runs). Wasn't asked once about second passport.

Nepal doesn’t allow dual nationality.

Anonymous participant 889 it’s not Nepal it’s Thailand I had problems in entry and Nepal’s not allowing has nothing to do with dual citizenship for others

Wow, an interesting experience for sure. I'm also a dual citizen, also declared it and have entered on both passports. No one said a thing when I first entered on the DTV.

That sounds rough and I'm happy you got in in the end. Enjoy your time here :)

One of the questions during the visa form is whether you held or have hold other citizenships, isn't it?

yes and I declared everything of course

Thanks for sharing. I've entered Thailand on two different passports to save pages on my main one like you did. I now have a DTV but haven't entered Thailand using it so we'll see what happens, but it seems like it wasn't too bad overall as there's nothing wrong with having two passports
Robert *******
I guess you used the other passport on entries in the past.

How could the Immigration Officer know that there is a passport in your luggage from another country?
Elías ********
They're all biometric now, so they know everything. In many countries you don't even need to take the passport out of your pocket to clear Immigration.

@Robert ******
obviously I have - I don’t hide having two passports - when one is running out of pages I was using the other - they have my fingerprints so passports connect
Anonymous ******************
PastelParsnip8198 they don’t connect 😬
Elías ********
Participante anónimo 890 they connect, in the sense that if both are biometric, even from different countries, the authorities know they're one person, EVEN if they had different legal names in each country.
Robert *******
Anonymous participant 890 nope, but both are mentioned on the screen
