Good morning.I am arriving in Thailand in 2 weeks time from Australia hopefully on a non O visa to stay for 3 years if it arrives in time.Otherwise I'll reapply from Thailand. My question is are there any particular Australian Government agencies that I need to inform of my plans? Thanks.
Answer summary
The user is planning to move to Thailand on a Non-O visa and is asking if there are any specific Australian government agencies they need to inform about their move. Responses suggest notifying Centrelink if receiving a pension, maintaining banking arrangements in Australia, and notifying the Australian Electoral Commission to avoid issues with jury duty and voting. It's also recommended to keep a local address in Australia for mail and stay compliant with tax obligations.

If it's like NZ you can be a non resident of Aus and keep a bank account for money.from.whatever source you get income from. Meaning you pay tax here with the 180 day rule but lot of excemptions here so very little to pay so guess what I'm saying is tslk to your Aus bank.

You need to apply for the 90-days Non-Imm-O Retirement Visa through the E-Visa online system of the Thai embassy in your home country or elsewhere in the World, before you fly to Thailand.

After you entered Thailand, you need to get registered in your accommodation per TM30 within 24 hours of arrival in the premises. If you rent or live in a friend’s accommodation, the landlord or the friend has to register you.

Immigration will only service you if you are properly registered in your accommodation by the TM30.

Every landlord, friend or hotel needs to register you within 24 hours of your arrival in the premises. While hotels do this automatically online, many landlords and friends are not aware of this or haven’t registered their house or rooms in the system. It is your responsibility to ensure that you got properly TM30 registered by your landlord or the hotel.

On arrival, you will get stamped in for an admitted stay of 90 days. Within the 90-days stay permit period, you have plenty of time to arrange for the application to the “1-year extended stay permit based on retirement” (which people wrongly refer to as a “retirement visa”- actually, this thing is not a visa. It is an extended stay permit)

You will need to get a Thai bank account openend as soon as possible after you entered. On a Non-Imm visa class, it is possible to get a Thai bank account opened, if you fulfill the minimal requirements.

In order to apply for the “90-days single entry Non-Imm-O retirement visa” through the online E-visa system at the Royal Thai Embassy of your home country, you can use the proof of income of a monthly minimum of equivalent of 65,000 THB, by using your original pension statements or other income documentation.

Or you use a deposit of a minimum of 800,000 THB or the equivalent in your home country currency, or on your home bank account, or on a Thai bank, or just anywhere in the World – as long as the account is in your sole name

However, for the application inside Thailand for the “1-year extension of stay permit” out of the 90-days Non-Imm-O retirement visa, if you are a citizen of a country, whose embassy in Thailand does not issue the “income affidavit” any more (which are the embassies of the USA, UK and Australia, Norway and Canada - AFAIK)

you would need proof by a “12 months bank statement”, showing that for the past 12 months, you have been transferring from abroad to your Thai bank account, month for month, not missing one single month, a minimum of 65,000 THB. The transfers must be coded in your bankbook as foreign transfers coming in from abroad

If your embassy still issues a legalized affidavit of income, you can use this method for the financial proof, as long as you can show a monthly income or pension of a minimum of 65,000 THB.

Some Immigrations have started to require that you at least have a Thai bank account and SOME money gets transferred into it from abroad – and they might also ask you for the source of the income.

For above mentioned citizens, in the first year there is no other way around than depositing a minimum of 800,000 THB in your Thai bank account and use this deposit for the financial proof.

For the application to the “one year extension of stay permit based on being over 50/retired” you need to show a minimum of 800,000 THB in your account, and on the day you apply, the funds must have been sitting in the account for a minimum of 2 months, and you got the “bank letter of guarantee” that confirms this.

NOTE: It is income method OR deposit method.

And there is a third method, called the “combination method”:

A combination, a mix of income and deposit.

Some immigrations don’t allow the combination method in the first year. And some Immigration want the deposit part to exceed 400,000 THB. The combination method means that the sum of the deposit AND the monthly income exceeds 800,000 THB in one year.

But let’s continue with the “normal method” (visa issued in your home country, followed by the application to the Extension inside Thailand):

On the day of application to the 1-year extension, the 800,000 THB must have “seasoned” in your account for two months, and this has to be proven with the “bank letter of guarantee” (rab roong thanakan).

What else do you need on Immigration?

*** Immigration might ask you to present your updated bankbook, and a receipt of a small sum withdrawal at an ATM of the same day.

*** a copy (and original) of your passport detail page signed in blue ink

*** a copy (and original) of the .pdf visa document signed in blue ink

*** a copy (and original) of the printed TDAC (if applicable) signed in blue ink

*** 1900 THB in cash

*** the TM7 form you can fill out at the Immigration

*** Immigration will ask you to sing several “exclusion of responsibility” forms (STM)

*** some Immigrations have started to ask applicants for a rental contract (Hua Hin is known to ask)

*** some also ask for a screenshot or printout of your TM30

You should visit Immigration ASAP after you have entered and ask them for the handout list of requirements. This is important, because some Immigrations use their own approach to the official rules.

After been issued the “1-year Extension of Stay”, the 800,000 THB need to remain in the account for 3 more months. After these 3 months, the deposit shall never go under 400,000 THB. Before your annual application for the next “1-year Extension of Stay”, a minimum of 800,000 THB must have seasoned in the account for two months, again

When you get issued the “1-year extension of stay”, you should always buy a re-entry permit for it.

A re-entry permit will keep your 1-year stay permit alive in case you exit Thailand before the expiry of the 1-year stay permit.

A single re-entry permit is 1000 THB on Immigration. A multi re-entry is 3800 THB.

With a multi re-entry permit, you can exit and re-enter as many times as you wish during the whole 1-year stay permit period.

Good Luck and a great time in Thailand

Change your verification processes to email not phone. Get Thai plan. Mines $7.5 a month.

Make sure the devices you are bringing are known by the banks etc. let them know your overseas 6 month travelling holiday. ( I know your not but helps transitioning).

Link any accounts to wise or other transfer account

Get a toggle from the bank to assist in overseas transfers and security. I have 1 for BOQ Oz and 1 for Uk bank.

Cancel Direct debits and bills

Get Medicare and update car licence if able too

Forwarding Australian address for Gov matters is best

Declare status at end of tax year to maximise any tax allowance. I.e. initial holiday.

Keep an Aussie address like a friend's place of family to have any mail redirection done there for the ATO, Super, banking etc.

I'm assuming you're keeping an Australian financial institution that's what I'm doing for a just in case scenario as some Thai banks have been shutting down expats banks accounts so always good to have some backup money which you can access just in case I reckon!

Read on here about informing the electoral Commission about moving OS and getting myself off the roll...yah.

I will still be doing a tax return every year like as per normal just to make it look like I'm still alive..... LoL.

Check your medicare card expiry date, if it's good within the next 5 years that should be okay. You will lose your medicare coverage if you leave Aust for 5 years. Just in case you want to go back home prior.

Electoral will also need to be informed. Keep your Aust phone number and apply for roaming in case you will need OTPs from the banks or gov agencies. With roaming, you can turn it on and off when you need and when you know you will have OTP coming.

Darren Hill ask about phone number in a separate post is my suggestion, as there's cheaper options than keeping your phone number on a plan with a major Australian Telco. If you're not already a member, consider joining the "Australians in Thailand" Facebook group. If you search that group, there will be plenty of past posts where that subject is discussed.

Colin Boyland The very inconvenience of that new phone number is you will need to get it changed to every business that had your number recorded in their systems. And you will need to do that before you leave Aust otherwise you will incur long distance bills to/from Thailand.

My experience when living in Thailand (first went in 2010, lived there on pension in 2016, so perhaps rules have changed): Age pensioners or disability pensioners receive about 10% less (no supplements). If less than 35 years in Australia as an adult, pension will be pro rata. Disability pension will be paid when permanently overseas, only if you are on maximum disability, and with no chance of ever being able to work again; even then, you will be paid NIL while you are overseas, within the first two years on disability pension. If living permanently overseas, we are not covered by Medicare if we visit Australia, with the intention of returning overseas soon. I informed the Australian Electoral Commission when I moved overseas.

How about getting yourself off the electoral role in case your number is up for jury duty and don’t get fined for not voting. Also, where are medicare or any MyGov paper mail go, a PO Box?

How long have you been waiting for the visa approval?

Darren Hill be careful with renting out your house, the rent will count as income and has to be declared in your tax return. After 180 days out of Australia and living in Thailand you will be Thai tax resident. Your house in Australia will be change to Investment property and will be subject to CGT. You have to inform the ATO, electoral commission and your Bank.

You will need a PO Box to plus a couple mor things.

Good luck.

Two weeks before arriving in Thailand and you're only just thinking about that question? You're leaving it a bit late.

You didn't specify which Non-O that you've applied for. You haven't said how old you are, so I'm going to assume two things, so that it might answer part of your question.

If you've applied for a Non-O based on 'Retirement' and you're receiving the Aged Pension, or soon will, you'll need to inform Centrelink

Val Zahup I know that, but with not even the type of Non-O Visa provided by the OP, if you noticed, I said that I will "assume two things" so I could provide one answer if my assumptions based on insufficient information were correct.
