What are the steps to extend a Non-Immigrant O visa for voluntary work in Thailand, and can I switch to a tourist visa instead?

Hi all... sorry me again.

I went to immigration office this morning in Samui to see what I need for non-immigrant O (voluntary work) visa extension. I found ONE person who spoke very poor English and didn't really understand what I was talking about. I think they suggested me going to Bangkok.... does that sound right? The only signed queue that mentioned extensions was for tourist visa's, but I know they do others because my neighbour went to days ago to extend his work visa and was in and out in 20 minutes.

Is it possible to change my visa to a simple tourist visa? If it is, does anyone know the process?

Can anyone offer any more advice as I am feeling really lost right now o.O
