Hi! Does anyone know if it is possible to get an extension of stay based on being granted a non-immigrant "O" visa for volunteer work? I know a registered organisation that could sponsor me with the required letter but haven't been able to get much info from immigration.

Thanks!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post inquires about the possibility of extending a Non-Immigrant O visa for volunteer work in Thailand, mentioning that an organization could sponsor the extension. Comments clarify that it's possible to apply for an extension before the initial visa expiry date, but there are complications regarding amnesty status and prior visa types that may affect eligibility.

Okay, now we sussed out what you're here on (a 30 day visa exempt entry) and that you got a 30 extension off that, AND then that you got the first stamp of the two stamp "unable to travel" due to covid-19 extension and that you're now on amnesty, I can tell you that there is no way to go from what you're on now to an in country 90 day Non-O visa (or any Non-Immigrant type visa).

Sadly you can't do it from amnesty :( you need a hard stamp stay in your passport and you don't have that. :/

All you can do is take the amnesty, wait it out, watch the news for what amnesty holders need to do once the amnesty runs out and follow that directive.

Unfortunately, based on your entry/extension history, you have no option to apply for an in country Non-Imm visa.

No

I was previously on a tourist visa (see comments above) and am currently on amnesty. So I am wondering whether it is possible to stay in the country by applying for the volunteer visa. I heard that it is now possible with ED visas and work permits but have heard nothing about the O visa.

Yes I did. And also applied for a second extension with embassy letter due to Covid. But the second time they just gave me 17 days and during that time the Amnesty was announced, our district was in lockdown, so I did not go back to immigration and have been wondering what to do / how to stay here longer. Just before the emergency declaration I found an organisation that could sponsor me for the O visa (letter and government registration) but now I am unsure if that is possible. But since non-immigrant work visas are being processed, I am hopeful!

you need to go back and get that second stamp, your district isn't locked down now. AND the stamp in your passport probably says "application for extension of stay under consideration" <- that is stamp ONE of a two stamp process. Even though the date has long since passed GO and get the second stamp to "close that loop".

Initially, yes. But the last time I came in it was just a stamp in the airport.

Did you apply for a 30 day extension at the immigration office for 1900baht on this 30 day visa exempt entry stamp that you got when you entered?

@Ben ************
okay, so you weren't here on a tourist visa then :(

IF you showed up here without having bought a visa from a thai consulate before you came and were stamped in for free for 30 days you got in on what's known as a 30 day visa exempt entry.

BUT at least we got that sorted out :P

So you bought a tourist visa from a thai consulate before you came here and were stamped in for 60 days?

@Ben ************
are you saying you GOT a 90 day Non-O visa issued, entered were stamped in for 90 days and then let that stamp run out and didn't apply for an extension which put you automatically on amnesty?

What was the reason you got the Non-O visa in the first place AND is there anything written on the visa sticker (like the foundation or reason it was issued for?)

I am currently under the Amnesty. Will that affect my chances of getting this approved? I was previously on a tourist visa which expired April 3rd

. I don't think anyone can answer that question in this forum unless they've done exactly the same as what you're proposing. This covid has brought scenarios never encountered before. But please do let the forum know how you get on. It could help others. Good luck with it and May The Force Be With You.

@Ben ************
. That's a difficult one. As technically you're already on overstay, your best move is to seek advice from the immigration office who would be issuing your visa.

Yes, on entry you got a Admitted until date stamped in your passport. Before that date you can with help of the organization where you volunteer apply for the Extension of Stay.
