Marraige visa requirements

I want to switch from a ed visa to a marriage visa and have read that I can either have 400k in the bank for 2 months or show deposits for the last 12 months of 40k and up is this correct?

I own a business in the UK and take a basic salary of £2000 a month and have pay slips to prove this and everything month once I get paid I send the money from my UK bank account to my thai bank account will immigration accept this as I have had a few agents say they wont but the thai law website states that they do,

I can put the 400k in my account if need be but it would mean liquidating some of crypto and I would rather not at the moment
Answer summary
The post discusses the requirements for switching from an ED visa to a marriage visa in Thailand, focusing on the financial criteria needed to qualify. The individual mentions two main options: maintaining 400,000 baht in a Thai bank account for at least 2 months or showing consistent international transfers of at least 40,000 baht over 12 months. However, there are differing opinions from commenters about whether monthly transfers from abroad will be accepted without an income affidavit, and many recommend depositing the full 400,000 baht for simplicity.

I'm in exactly the same position!! The 400,000 is a much easier option. Thailand has changed the tax laws, no questions are asked with the 400,000, but with the monthly they will dig deep into the source of income, not an issue for most. Also remember that after 180 days in Thailand you automatically become a tax resident and will be required to pay backdated taxes from the day you arrived on any money you transfer or spend in Thailand, so be sure to inform HMRC and stop the tax payments on your wage. It's complicated but nothing worth doing is easy as they say! Best of luck!

Danny Barton I'm sure this is not correct about being taxed on anything you remit to Thailand.

If you get the retirement visa and deposit 800k is this taxable also or not?

it's less than £10,000. Just put the money in your Thai bank account. That's a much simpler solution.

OP
Muri Max lol you think £2000 a month is a high salary? I spend that a month just on out goings, all my savings are in crypto and I would rather they stay there then in a thai bank account

I did the income route for a few years (of 18) and it just has to be an international transfer. Not sure how an in country job helps that. If you are working in the country you'd have a work permit. If you use Wise, it will say international transfer on your Thailand bank statement. This is the legal and acceptable monthly income. Minimum 12 months. Source doesn't matter.

Ryan Bishop you are not 100% correct - as some Immigrations have begun to ask for the source as well

Greg Alexander yea they are cracking down on scammers. we don't have many of those in the rice fields. the big scam here is fake marriages.

Ryan Bishop What immigration office(s) have allowed this? I was considering trying this in Krabi if I get long enough off of work to get to a multiple re-entry stamp

Zak Joerin i've never dealt with Krabi. we're up in Isaan. i think you have to go wherever your residence is. their English is probably better there tho. i also don't know how long you need to be in the country before you can apply. i was on a 90-day the first time and then 1-year Visas since then. other farang will know better about the process if you're not in the country.

"but the thai law website states that they do" . . . . . yes, they do, IF you show up with an income affidavit of your embassy in Thailand. But since you are a British citizen, you can't

They dont care where the 400,000 baht comes from! As long as it in thai bank account. And seasoned for min 2 / 3 monthes. My thai bank said 3 months!

I recently achieved this! Immigration never questioned where the 400,000 came from! 👍

The income has to guaranteed income from a pension or passive income like apartment rentals, not from a job. Even with that they may request your tax returns and bank statements showing Where the money is from.

Deborah Hines since his embassy in Bangkok won't issue an income affidavit, his income is TOTALLY irrelevant as it cannot be used as proof of finances on Immigration

Deborah Hines I dont work tho so it's not a job its a business that I own that I have people working for me do was thinking that might pass as a passive income

Some immigration offices may allow monthly transfers but an increasing number will only allow you to use monthly income if you actually work inside Thailand and thus have Thai income.

However neither an ED visa nor a Non-O visa, based on marriage or otherwise allow you to legally work remotely from Thailand. For that you need a DTV based on Workation.

MagentaGrape4961 Whether you work, own a business, or live off investments doesn’t really change the issue. The relevant question is whether your immigration office accepts overseas transfers under its current practice.
Greg ***********
Greg ***********
MagentaGrape4961 your embassy in Bangkok will not certify and legalize your income statements. So, you cannot use these for the financial proof on Immigration. You EITHER put 400,000 THB into your Thai bank account and have it seasoned for 2 months before you can apply for the 1-year extension of stay permit based on being married to a Thai wife, OR show a 12-months bank statement that confirms 12 consecutive transfers, one each and every month, not missing a single month, over a minimum of 40,000 THB, and the transfers must be coded in your bankbook as having come from abroad
John **********
John **********
MagentaGrape4961 that doesn't matter, you can only use the immigration office that serves the area that you live in. Visit them and ask them, and while there get the hand out of their requirements plus how you switch from your ED extension to an extension based on marriage
Greg ***********
Greg ***********
MagentaGrape4961 if you can get a 12-months bank statement from your Thai bank that confirms you have been transferring a minimum of 40,000 THB from abroad into your Thai bank account, month for month, not missing one single month, for the past 12 months, and your bankbook shows foreign transfers incoming, then MAYBE Immigration accepts it as a financial proof for the application to the 1-year extension. However, I must WARN you - first you should visit your Immigration and ask them if they are willing to accept it. As
@John *********
correctly noted, not every Immigration allows the 12-months of transfers method for froreigners married to a Thai wife (they will tell you that you must earn this income inside Thailand to get accepted).
